Yup. Hannibal redemption fics are not going to be in-character. And I read a Sauron redemption fic once and it was honestly scary. Now, I'm currently reading a WIP never went evil in the first place Mairon fic that seems to work so far. But a redemption fic? The idea is a little terrifying.

I've never even seen or heard of a Hannibal redemption fic (the idea boggles the mind), but I know there are some AU's where Hannibal isn't a cannibal. That defeats the purpose for me.

A Sauron redemption fic sounds just as laughable.

The fic was pretty laughable. It was a Sauron/Eonwe fic, and Sauron being evil was all Eonwe's fault. It was so hilariously out of character. I mean, I love Sauron as a character so very much, but he was already full of himself and had issues even before he went full on evil. And the idea that he murdered and tortured and did general dark lord things just because his true love didn't try hard enough to save him just makes me laugh.

Hannibal not a cannibal? What's the point? The whole point of his character is how sick and twisted he is. Where's the fun if he isn't that?

I suppose the non-cannibal AU's come from people who find Mads' attractive and charming and want to ship him with Hugh, but don't want to write anything as dark as the actual show.

Again, I don't understand it (why would you watch in the first place?), but some people like to change things around completely.

I suppose that's the same reason whoever wrote the Sauron redemption fic...

Well, to be fair to you this whole memory palace scenario makes more sense than a straight up, “Hannibal woke up one day and released he's evil and should change" scenario (Which would never in a million years happen). If his reason for attempting redemption was simply so Will would accept him... Well, Hannibal doesn't have it in him, he couldn't change that drastically and wouldn't want to, but he IS obsessed with Will, so... It could be worse.

It still sounds better than a lot of Hannibal fic tbh.
