Politics Thread

Juanita goddamn Broaddrick is going to cost the Democratic Party the national fucking election. Donald Trump is going to be the next President.

We are fucking doomed, people.

God dammit. Can you believe this shit?

Literally ten months for the public to forget, hold onto your horses, jeez.

Also, can people stop putting political opinions in their mostly fandom (especially AO3) names??? It's extremely annoying to see "abortion is murder gave you a kudos" or anything of that ilk.

Re: Politics Thread

It's not about the public as a whole so much.

The thing is Hillary *needs* huge turnout from women to beat Trump. She 100% needs it. And this is absolutely going to hurt her with women. Hugely. Both in terms of the issue itself, but also because it provides a ready-made response any time she tries to campaign on the basis of gender. It's bad enough that it's going to hurt her with young committed feminist women - because believe me, they are going to listen to the attack here - but the bigger issue is that it hamstrings her campaign hugely on a major issue that she both should own and needs to own. And I have zero faith in Hillary's team being able to own an answer to this, narrative-wise.

On the other hand Bernie's also going to have a major women problem if he somehow manages to win out over Hillary. Count on it. So either way it's going to be a major issue, especially since the Republicans are definitely going to nominate a woman VP candidate to go along with Trump.

It's a huge, huge, huge Achilles heel. It is a major, crippling weakness in the single most key group for defeating Trump. Which was already going to be far from a given.

We are fucked fucked fucked.

Wait, so you think Hillary is going to beat Bernie in the primaries?

Because I'm not even sure about that. And I'm even less certain Trump is going to get through his primaries. Again, the ten months out ahead of us leaves plenty of time for things to go haywire. Thinking the election's over when the primaries aren't even finished is just silly.

I'd say 80% chance that Hillary is going to beat Bernie (this news probably brought it down from 90% chance). She is - at the moment, according to most polls - the preferred choice of Democratic voters by a substantial amount.

I think Trump is the most likely victor in the Republican primary. The main path I can see where he doesn't win is if he both does much worse than expected in the Iowa caucuses (like, finishing third or fourth), and establishment candidates start dropping off really quickly after Iowa. He polls really well in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and the Super Tuesday states, and the rest of the field is just so completely split - which matters a lot when you start talking about delegate counts. It's far from a certainty but he has to be considered the favorite.

And, yeah, it's a long way about, but there are still fundamentals to look at, and they're starting to look really, really worrying.

Oh man, I am either in the completely wrong part of the internet or just not reading the data right, because I thought Bernie was far more popular than Hillary and that Trump would take one of the unsuccessful Republican candidates as VP (Carson, I think?) in order to pool votes. It's actually heartening to hear Hillary is popular in the polls -- I voted for her in 2008 primary after all! But, I mean, on a human level, she just always looks so tired -- and stepping down from Secretary of State was still such a shock for me.

But I'll admit I'm not too concerned about the presidential race at the moment, more concerned with Congress (esp. House of Representatives) and starting to feel sorry for Obama, whose lame duckness kicked in waayyy too early. D:

Actually, I'm going to rant about username types I hate, and ones I would never reply to asks for or just default if I ever had the misfortune of hitting them on yuletide:

Character's body part
Character is personal headcanon here
xxNamesxxLikexxThisxx
Sexual commands
Animal + character name
Emoticon (literally what do you expect people to call you?)

Hm. I thought I had a lot more but I guess that's it. Well, that and the obvious political messages, even the ones I agree with like "marrythegays"! Like, why!

I'm guessing you don't believe her then?

On one hand, Clinton (Bill) is a sleaze, on the other hand, I can't see him as a rapist. But then, my mind was boggled with all the evidence stacked against Cosby so...

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even considering whether what she's saying is true, at the moment - that's a separate question.

Just reckoning the political consequences. And freaking out.

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It saddens me to hear that because I think politicians should be held to the same standard. At the moment I think Hillary's involvement might be overstated but if future evidence surfaces to the contrary, I wouldn't want her as president. Yes, her policies have promise and she has been good with human rights, but, if this situation were true, it would just be nepotism to the nth degree.

Again, not saying they have to be flawless or have solid voting records (impossible) but I don't think a person guilty of covering of rape should be in office, just like I don't think convicted rapists or murderers should be presidents.

I also find the timing suspicious as she comes out right after Trump hints that he's willing to go after Hilary on Billy's past (which I don't think is called for and if Trump's record on women isn't much better). I think most sane people do as well.

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I don't believe it for a second because the timing is just way too convenient.

Before you think Trump, Hillary, or Bernie are the Devil Incarnate whose piss-poor attempts at public policy and diplomacy will plunge the U.S. into 666 years of agony, you should take a step back and remember the country has weathered through far, far, FAR worse presidents.

We survived our own civil war, for goodness' sakes!

Yeah I got to say, American politics is like playing on easy mode as everyone's so goddamn moderate. Meanwhile in Europe some of us are voting for actual Nazis, hooray.

If Trump wins, I want a Yay, Trump thread! o/
(This is my second time hoping he'll win so I'm not holding my breath.)

You are fucking disgusting. Please go turn in your human card.

Re: Politics Thread

Probably been a human much longer than you AND it looks like Bernie and Hillary, while supporting better policies, aren't much better than Trump morally so it's not like you have the moral high ground! :P

Show me where Bernie or Hilary raped their spouse. I'll wait.

Where did Bernie or Hilary admit they'd fuck their own daughter?

I believe the rape accusations against both Bill Clinton and Trump. I suppose it's better that Hillary hasn't been directly accused of rape, but I'm still hoping for Bernie.

May as well buy guns, put them to our heads and pull the trigger now then.

lol wut

Oh wow, so we have all the votes counted up already? News to me, I wish someone had let me know when the election was. Or the primaries for that matter.

Calm your tits, you have no idea what will or can happen in ten months. Even then, I wouldn't bet on Donnie being president... maybe ever.
