Rarepairs are the worst fanfic thing.

You'll pry Sirius Black/Luna Lovegood from my cold, dead hands.

I feel this way about small fandoms FS has introduced me to. I'll go and check it out, love it, come back to talk about it and I'll get crickets. :(

You know, someone left a comment on a secret a few weeks back that was essentially "Well, if you want a rarepair to be less rare, start writing it yourself." Initially I was like "Hey, man, fuck you. It doesn't always work like that." But, then, like a week later someone left a comment on one of my rarepair fics saying I'd inspired them to write for that pairing, which they did. And, today, someone did art of my rarepair OTP (probably because I don't fucking shut up about them). So, you know, sometimes getting the ball rolling with a rarepair can inspire others to join in with you. I've seen it happen in my current fandom with other pairings too. The pair may never be big, but you might generate some interest in active fandom by just talking about them or writing about them or drawing them.

I have no writing ability. And yes, I could totally dedicate a year or so learning to write. But I have a job and other hobbies that I would enjoy doing.

Yeah, I get that not everyone can write. Shit, I can hardly write. Just posting about the rarepair or talking about in online spaces can get people interested too.

NA I think it is my comment you are referring to above; thanks! I stand by it and I hope no one thinks fiction is written without hard labor.

Even most badfic are probably written while the authors push their skill limits to hurtful degrees. It is never easy if you really try to make it readable, but it can be fun when you write about a subject you love.

Another good thing with fanfic is that you can get away with drabbles: fun or haunting ideas translated through just a few sentences. Surely anyone can manage that? And think about the impact for your rarepair!

As someone who get herself into Genesis/Zevran, I feel your pain.

OP, I feel you. Intriguing secrets in this community have introduced me to SO MANY THINGS that sometimes I wish I'd never heard of (often because of the exact problems the secret was complaining about in the first place! Doh).

And rarepairs, also, I tend to love and get frustrated with in equal amounts. Luckily for me the two don't overlap too much, because most of the rarepairs mentioned on FS are for live action things, whereas my fandoms are manga/anime, games, and (certain genres of) books (not into Tolkien, alas)...

It's a shame though because while I'm a mediocre writer I do dabble in fanfic from time to time and I often write rare/crack pairs, partly because I love them and partly because I don't want to be writing the same sorts of stuff everyone else is writing, and I like filling niches that nobody else does. And... I think I have seen one or two other people around here express similar sentiment before?

I think we should totally have a regular (weekly?) second-page subthread devoted to rare stuff in fan fic/art you wish you could find more of, pairings or otherwise. I'd offer to take that on myself if I were in a compatible timezone (unfortunately FS updates around midnight for me, and by the time I'm on - this hour of day usually - the daily rush of posts has already died off).

Not OP but as someone who's mainly in manga/anime fandoms and would give an arm and a leg for more activity in the more obscure ones (it sucks that the source material isn't in english because there's that added level of inaccessibility! :x), I would verymuch appreciate a regular rarepair whining/commisserating maybe even creating? thread on F!S. Unfortunately I'm in a bad timezone as well (and constantly moving about to boot, sigh).

Ah, not saying it should be anime/manga oriented (just that those are the mediums with most of my rarepairs), just that there's frustration in there too, heh.
