Fun fact the author now gets people asking her why she ripped off Harry Potter, when she wrote her books quite a bit earlier.

The Worst Witch is what I instantly thought of. The books are for youngish kids (though I certainly enjoyed them in my mid-thirties) and the TV series is for the 12-13 bracket, I would guess. Don't like the TV series quite so much - Bechdel test fail on a regular basis, which hardly happens in the books, but it's still a fun watch.
