If I don't know what's good I ask the bartender what they'd have. Some bars are heavily geared toward beer and have a half dozen on tap that are surprising and complex. Some bars specialize in cocktails, make their own bitters, and the bartender generally will want to wow you with their take on an old fashioned or a gimlet or suchlike.

If it's a restaurant or a bar that specializes in wines, I'll ask the maître d or sommelier about pairings if I don't spy a Riesling or Gewurztraminer on the menu that catches my eye.

If a bar can't make a fucking bloody mary though... it's time to leave the bar.

You're pretty much 100% accurate lol.

If the bar wants to be a club it should just be a club. I have no patience for the other shitty option, because at least at a club there's usually a decent dance floor.

Stella is correct; according to my friend it's "a bar that wants to be a club", right across the street from my college campus. (Like, literally right across the street). They had a shit ton of options that involved red bull, and the music was loud, though I didn't find it too annoying until they slammed up the music for "Turn Down for What". |D

I'm not a fan of beer myself, which I forgot to add, but I'll always try it if I can just get a sample. I'll keep the rest of it in mind, thank you!

If I were you I would stop going out with that friend or start picking the venues yourself. Sounds like an absolute waste of time to go to a club that isn't a club.

...Or I could keep going places with my friend when I don't actually mind that it's a weird place to be, considering that I don't know the area very well yet, and I'm not comfortable going by myself.

I don't like beer either, but see if that bar/club thing has ciders. Normal ciders aren't nearly as bitter and nasty as beer, but what's really good are fruity ciders. Check if they have Swedish ciders; Kopparberg is pretty good (I love their elder-flower cider), as is Recorderlig (personally I find their strawberry one to be too sweet and pear is just shit, but their passion fruit cider is amazing).

Those do sound good, I'll give them a shot! :o

My go-to is cider (I don't like beer) and cider is really popular right now so most bars carry one.

I did see one on tap, but I didn't order it. I might grab one from the local store, to see if I like it, before I buy it in a club/bar/thing.
