What do you order at bars?

Went out to one last night, one that claims to be a pseudo club/bar (what even is the difference?) and I wasn't quite sure what to order. Friend of mine ordered me a tequila shot (which I wasn't a fan of), and a drink that was vodka + cranberry juice.

The bar also sold something called an "Adios Motherfucker", which I didn't try, but anyone who has, is it any good?

They couldn't make bloody marys or blended grasshoppers, but, again, I wasn't sure what kind of bar this was, so that might explain it.

What kinds of things do you like to order in bars? Said friend has offered to take me out another time, and I did quite enjoy it, but I'm trying to get a list together of things I want to try, so I can at least fake-sound like I know what I'm talking about.

I'll get mixed drinks if I can, something sweet. If they don't do that, I'll just get rum and coke.

I didn't like rum last time I tried it, but I was drinking it straight, so I'll see if mixing it with coke is something I like, thanks! :o

If I don't know what's good I ask the bartender what they'd have. Some bars are heavily geared toward beer and have a half dozen on tap that are surprising and complex. Some bars specialize in cocktails, make their own bitters, and the bartender generally will want to wow you with their take on an old fashioned or a gimlet or suchlike.

If it's a restaurant or a bar that specializes in wines, I'll ask the maître d or sommelier about pairings if I don't spy a Riesling or Gewurztraminer on the menu that catches my eye.

If a bar can't make a fucking bloody mary though... it's time to leave the bar.

Stella is correct; according to my friend it's "a bar that wants to be a club", right across the street from my college campus. (Like, literally right across the street). They had a shit ton of options that involved red bull, and the music was loud, though I didn't find it too annoying until they slammed up the music for "Turn Down for What". |D

I'm not a fan of beer myself, which I forgot to add, but I'll always try it if I can just get a sample. I'll keep the rest of it in mind, thank you!

My go-to is cider (I don't like beer) and cider is really popular right now so most bars carry one.

My granddad's favorite was Rum & Coke. I usually get vodka cranberry but I'm ignorant in terms of alcohol. I've had margaritas (different flavors thereof), gin & tonic, whiskey sidecars, wine, and beer at restaurants but I've never really been to a real bar. My niece says Sex on the Beach is actually good and my nephew's into Mudslides or whatever. White Russian SOUNDS good...

I usually ask if they've got any interesting beers, preferably ale.

When I go for long drinks or cocktails, I like gin based Tom Collins or some vodka+cranberry thing.

Rum and coke or vodka cranberries are my drink of choice. I enjoy Malibu bay breezes too, but I only order those if I know the bar can make them.

Do you not drink beer? That's usually standard, but I don't drink beer at all, so if a bar has either Angry Orchard or Not Your Father's Root Beer, I'll drink those as well.

Usually beer because mixed drinks are really hit or miss for me. Thiugh, I'll pretty much drink anything I'm paying for even if it sucks. (I'll drink anything you're paying for too, because free drinks!) Though, if I'm not getting beer, then gin and tonic because unless you leave out the gin it's pretty hard to fuck it up.

I'm not into a lot of alcoholic beverages, but I love Moscow mules. It's vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, and it tastes really refreshing.

Cranberry vodka or screwdrivers (vodka + OJ) usually. Sometimes rum and coke. I also love fuzzy navels (peach schnapps + OJ) but I usually get screwdrivers at the bar.

I tried an AMF once. I haaaaaaate tequila so I couldn't even get through more than a few sips. iirc it's not just tequila but some other liqueurs and then soda I think?

I generally look at their specialty menu and see if they've got anything appealing. If not, I ask if they've got vanilla vodka and root beer, or vanilla vodka or cherry vodka and coke, or cinnamon whiskey and coke. Spiced rum and coke is really good if plain rum and coke bores you.

Anything that has pineapple juice is usually good. Citrus in general cuts alcohol taste, and pineapple juice seems particularly good at it, especially if mixed with orange juice.

I like citrusy mixed drinks.

Current favorite is a Ginger Lemonade. Ginger infused vodka with lemonade. Not all bars will have that though.

Gin and tonic is something every bar will have. I also like ciders.

For non-alcohalic, a shirley temple with a splash of orange juice.

Big fan of fruity and sweet drinks myself. Bloody Marys aren't really a clubbing drink, they're a brunch drink, like mimosas.

Margaritas are delicious if you want to give tequila another try (straight up shots can be overwhelming), but I really enjoy the taste of tequila so it might not be for you. Tequila sunrises, too, those have orange juice and grenadine.

If you like vodka cranberries, you should try a Cosmopolitan, the basic recipe is vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice. Many bars make variations with different flavors, like peach cosmos, which switch out the triple sec for peach schnapps. Mojitos, French 75s, and daiquiris all sweet drinks as well.

But really, asking the bartender for recommendations can yield excellent results if the bartender knows what they're doing.

Everyone has their own preferences, so I think the best way for you to find out is to try different stuff and see what you like.
When I first starting going out to bars just knowing what some of the essential cocktails are made ordering so much easier.

Things literally every bar will have:
Jack and Coke/Whiskey Coke/Whiskey Diet
Seven Seven (whiskey and 7-Up; tastes like ginger ale)
Rum and Coke
Whiskey Sour
Vodka Cran
Whiskey shots if I want to get hammered fast
Four Horsemen if it's your birthday and you want to get obliterated (4 different kinds of whiskey.)

Things not every bar will have, but are quite good:
Dark and Stormy: Dark rum and ginger beer
White Russian: Vodka, Kaluha, and half-and-half. Will get you WASTED.
Sake Bombs: A shot of sake dropped into a glass of beer, which is then chugged. Considerably better than jaegerbombs. Irish Car Bombs (baileys and whiskey mixed and dropped into Guiness) also good. Both are party drinks and will get you hammered a lot faster than you thought.
Rumchata: pre-mixed horchata and rum. Pretty much tastes like the milk from a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Mojito: Rum, sugar syrup, and mint leaves.
Rum and Dr Pepper (apparently this is called a Witch Doctor?)


Pretty much what you have to do is find a hard liquor that you like and then just get it blended with a simple mixer like sodas or juices, or just tell the bartender you want a mixed drink with (x) in it and have them recommend something. For the record, never drink anything that has Red Bull and liquor together as that shit kills people.

I drink lots, but most commonly, whatever beer seems nice, or whiskey on the rocks.

If it's a nicer cocktail bar, I'll look over the menu and probably order something based around either whiskey or gin.

It's harder to figure if you don't like to drink.

Probably whatever non-alcoholic thing they have that isn't cola. If they have iced tea, I'd take that.

I do remember one of the rare times I was in a bar I got large pitchers of iced water while everyone else was drinking alcohol. I think I managed to go back for a second pitcher too.
