I generally look at their specialty menu and see if they've got anything appealing. If not, I ask if they've got vanilla vodka and root beer, or vanilla vodka or cherry vodka and coke, or cinnamon whiskey and coke. Spiced rum and coke is really good if plain rum and coke bores you.

Anything that has pineapple juice is usually good. Citrus in general cuts alcohol taste, and pineapple juice seems particularly good at it, especially if mixed with orange juice.

there's a drink called a candy box that's chocolate liqueur, butterscotch schnapps and vanilla vodka which I really like if I'm in the mood for a sweet but strong drink.
