As someone who read the whole manga, I can certify that Chobits does indeed tackle some weighty themes.

It also features so much juvenile humor and fanservice that fetishes Chii's childlike innocence that you end up getting distracted from anything Clamp were trying to say.

This. It's been a while since I've read Chobits, but the constant sexualization of this robot who has the mental capacity of a child is creepy, plus the weird incest thing between her sister and their 'father.' And that one female friend of the main character whose main existence beyond her small arc is "lol tits." Not uncommon anime tropes, but that doesn't mean they're not sexist.
