I'm not a fan of crude humor but I'm not big on sarcasm. I AM a sarcastic person who grew up in a very sarcastic family. As I grow up and value earnestness more, I've started to dislike sarcasm (and related condescending humor) as lazy and unimaginative.

Transcript please? This is sort of painful to read.

[Pic of Chiyo (I think) from Chobits and the word 'Underpants!']

I have no problem with silly humor, childish humor, ribald humor, impish humor, or really anything other than mocking, mean-spirited humor, and I'm getting increasingly sick of the condescension from people who do have a problem with those things. I'm sure you're so amazingly mature that you can only enjoy the most serious of shows, but can you please stop treating your personal tastes as objective facts? And for that matter, why is it so unbelievable that a show could have a childish or ribald humor and also have serious social commentary or philosophy?

P.S. If you're going to rant about how sexist Chobits is, at least watch more than one episode. There's a reason for all the stuff about treating people like objects and objects like people!

Aww, the only Clamp title I didn't read! If it were a test, it would be 9/10. :)

It's a good series; it was my fav CLAMP title, until I discovered xxxHolic.

To be fair, those kinds of humor are incredibly common in manga and anime to the point of annoying, kinda hard to take a philosophy lesson seriouly when the characters joke about underwears and sexual harassment every five pages. It gets tiring after watching a dozen shows like this and you can end up very elitist about what you watch.

That said, I agree that Chobits is very tame in that regard, as Clamp in general is not very fanservice-y. Chobits is their most raunchy work (not including Miyuki in Wonderland because the whole purpose of that manga is yuri fanservice) and it's still no where near as bad as other things I watched/read. Of course the person you are talking about is very ridiculous to make presumptions about a show from the first episode, and it seems they didn't do research on the authors because honestly, if you know Clamp then you know it's gonna be much more than just fanservice.

While that might be true, as other anons pointed out, pantyshots and sexual harassment jokes are a dime a dozen in anime, so yeah, I think it does cheapen.
Besides, it's possible to show an objectifying society without being objectifying yourself.

Yes, the series with the very enlightening moral that nothing displays the goodness of mankind like swearing your love to a piece of software and living in celibacy for its sake /sarcasm

I agree with what you're saying, but I thiiiink you could've picked a better example.

I'm curious what you'd pick. I'm into various things that get shit, but none of them get quite as much shit as Chobits.

I'd say Ouran, except I've never heard of anyone complaining about that one for being silly comedy. There's also a number of series I could mention that have a lot of comedy, but are still famous for their "deeper" parts (Honey and Clover, FMA, Princess Tutu, Ikuhara's works). Honestly, my problem is that Chobits is the worst offender in Clamp's attempts at being philosophical. It uses fanservice subversively, yes, but that subversion is to preach a moral that is ridiculous.

As someone who read the whole manga, I can certify that Chobits does indeed tackle some weighty themes.

It also features so much juvenile humor and fanservice that fetishes Chii's childlike innocence that you end up getting distracted from anything Clamp were trying to say.

This. It's been a while since I've read Chobits, but the constant sexualization of this robot who has the mental capacity of a child is creepy, plus the weird incest thing between her sister and their 'father.' And that one female friend of the main character whose main existence beyond her small arc is "lol tits." Not uncommon anime tropes, but that doesn't mean they're not sexist.

Chobits is one of my favourite manga series by CLAMP ... but I couldn't make it through the anime. I think I gave up after the "pants" episode because it was just utterly dumb. I intend to give the series another chance eventually, to see what it does with the more serious content, but I think the anime takes WAY too long to get to anything of substance.
