Recently, one of my friends got into an arugment with this one dude, who claimed that it was "illogical" to write gay people in medieval or victorian era settings because since "homophobia" existed back then, it would of made it impossible for any gay people to ever exist ever, and writing them in any time period that wasn't the 2000s made you a bad writer and a pandering sjw. I'm dead serious.

I'm half conviced the people who actually believe this just don't want diversity in their media, so they'll come up with any stupid ridiculous bullshit to justify it lmao.

People get way too up in arms about this supposed rash of pandering sjw writers ruining fandom or fiction with their messages. I don't doubt it happens, I just don't think it's this big bad pandemic we all need to guard against. Some people see SJW boogeymen behind every door.

Has that dude even heard of Oscar Wilde?

To be fair, writing gay people AS THEY EXIST TODAY in pre-modern settings gets pretty dodgy. The notion of homosexuality as an identity is a fairly new one in Western society; history was full of dudes who weren't what we'd consider gay, they just had sex with other men. (Also presumably a fair number of ladies who weren't lesbians, they just fucked women, but history has kept less-good track of women and their experiences, unfortunately.)
