To be fair, writing gay people AS THEY EXIST TODAY in pre-modern settings gets pretty dodgy. The notion of homosexuality as an identity is a fairly new one in Western society; history was full of dudes who weren't what we'd consider gay, they just had sex with other men. (Also presumably a fair number of ladies who weren't lesbians, they just fucked women, but history has kept less-good track of women and their experiences, unfortunately.)
