Honestly I think you hit on why I personally don't like the whole MR/Saitama thing. I hate that whenever someone shows ANY interest in another character that it automatically has to be exploited for romantic/sexual tension. With a character like Genos? I get it. He's pretty obsessed, and Saitama seems receptive enough to Genos in his life that it doesn't feel weird for me at least when people ship them.

But like...it's just shown that MR has faith in Saitama and people just jumped all over that shit. I sometimes feel like people have a hard time not imagining all the semi-reasonably attractive characters are boning one another. Like why can't Saitama and MR just have cute little noodle get togethers as friends without it needing to be this whole "yeah they totally want to bone" thing?

(This next part is only very tangentially related.) I dunno to be honest Saitama feels kind of...not asexual to me, but he's very neutered as a protagonist. It's not that I couldn't imagine him enjoying sex or finding people sexually appealing, but for all the "oppai" shirts and porno mags, there's something there that I can't quite put my finger on. I want to say "demisexual" but...I dunno.

AYRT

It is why I both don't mind and don't want the Saitama/MR ship, tbh. I have the same response as you in that I wish more characters could be friends without being instantly shipped. I think they work so well as supportive friends, and not quite so much as romantic partners.

But at the same time, I'm so totally done with rival-shipping/hate-shipping/etc that I can't hate the pairing? I like it when a ship comes from a place of mutual respect, and Saitama/MR at least has that going for it. (I'm the anon who responded just below to the ZoSan ship, fwiw.) Possibly my not-minding is coming from a place of "it could be worse" hahah.

I have complicated feelings about Saitama's sexuality. I actually can see him as ace, or gray-ace, possibly demi. But then, I also read him as depressed, and so part of me goes "maybe that's why he has pretty much no sex drive?" I feel like it's something that might change if ever his depression began to improve. So yeah, complicated feelings.

Simple answer: because shippers gonna ship.

Honestly I expect any close-friend pair to get shipped at least a little bit, it's easy to translate into a romantic relationship when there's already a groundwork of affection and trust to work with. Doesn't mean that I like every single pair this happens to but at the same time it doesn't really bother me because even if I don't ship it I can usually see why someone else would.

But you don't have to like it either, that's cool.

Ah I don't know what I think on Saitama's sex-drive(or apparent lack thereof). I've seen points on him being asexual or depressed and I think both interpretations could work, I think I'd leave that in the hands of people better equipped with ideas on that front.
