25. You, uh. You do realize that some of the people who write/read rape fic (and even get off on it!) are survivors themselves, right? It does happen.

Fiction =/= reality.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And honestly... almost wishing someone to be raped to teach them a lesson < reading and enjoying rape fics with fictional characters, 'cause that's your kink. Or maybe you're just curious what will happen if Daffy Ducks rapes Porky Pig, I dunno.

Seriously, I find that wishing rape on someone makes the person way more likely to be disturbing and fucked-up than a kink which you have... in fiction you read.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare you make light of rape? I hope you get raped!!! >:(

Oh, wait. Right. I'm supposed to say "LOLOLOLOL COOL IT'S GOING TO ROCK" because I'm obviously a dirty rape fetishist who thinks rape in real life is awesome and hot.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
'Cause reading hurt/comfort fic totes mean I want to get poisoned. Or shot. Or kidnapped. Or stabbed. Or sick. Or...

Not the secret poster, but as someone who has been interfered with, a lot of non-con/rape fic pisses me off too. This is because it almost always is either trying to be sexy, or is a piss poor method of cramming some h/c [Oh look, magical healing penis!] loving into the story.

I understand that perhaps it could be cathartic for some, but in my nine years in fandom I've read less than five rape stories which dealt with it properly.

(Though that all said: wishing rape on anybody? Is seriously fucked up.)

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't object to "most rape fic sucks". That's true enough, just... not how the OP stated it :/

However, I would have to ask -- is writing rape for the sake of hotness (rather than for the sake of exploring character trauma) a bad thing? Is it automatically a degradation of the actual real experience, to write about it that way in fiction?

I'm not really comfortable making a decision either way, myself. If the author is upfront about it being a) a rapefic and warns/cut/whatevers appropriately and b) primarily about being hot... mm. It's tricky.

Although, I have to say I'm trying to think up an equivalent to rapefic -- something that's very serious and impacting/traumatizing in real life but could be used for sexual gratification in fiction -- and failing.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no; I agree that it was said incredibly badly- though it's hard to be rational when you're hurting.

Psychologically speaking, most rape is held to be an act of violence rather than lust- for example, it's been documented that most prison rapes occur between hetrosexual men because of the combination of physical and psychological trama. Not that I'm discounting lust as a motive, but if it's for the sake of hotness, why not make it clear that it's between two consenting parties role playing? Domination, bondage and blood play don't bother me one iota. True, kinks don't make sense, but writers should always try for some semblance of realism, surely? And enjoyment of rape is pretty far outside the boundaries of feasible reality.

I'm a pretty laid back person about things, and while personally I'd be happy if no one ever wrote any rapefic ever again, I do believe in being tolerant about other people's kinks; which only really leaves the course of action I have know- ignoring them when they crop up in my fandom.

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think that the hotness factor of rapefic may be less about the characters' lust, as the readers finding the domination/power aspect (which, I fully agree with you, rape is all about -- it's definitely not about sex/lust) hot. As to why it can't be between two consenting parties roleplaying... well, I dunno. That does remove an element of the "realness", maybe?

... well, I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, though, kinks in fiction are all fine. It's just when the fiction carries over into reality that... no.

[identity profile] manda-babylon.livejournal.com 2008-03-01 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Incest, for one. In real life, it's traumatic and damaging. That doesn't mean shipping the Elric brothers makes someone a horrible person.

What is dub-con? Is it non-con's brother? o_O

[identity profile] tillieyo.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I've been raped (repeatedly... had a bad childhood), but I still think rape can be hot between fictional characters. Not the kind where it turns out the victim wanted it. The one where the victim couldn't cope with it and kills themselves.

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm awful; this comment, for some reason, made me laugh.

I've been raped too - so um, I'm allowed to laugh? 8D ♥
(Like black guys getting to say 'nigger', I guess.)
