Are you serial? I've worked in nursing homes. All most of the staff do is wonder how many of the residents are going to be alive come spring... apart from caring for their immediate needs, of course.

Not to their faces, obviously, but the question "Is ____ still with us?" if a staff member comes back from a vacation or a different posting is generally one of the first things that gets asked.

We develop gallows humour too. Some of the shit we say in hospitals... not in front of patients or family, but it's a huge coping thing, knowing the people you interact with could (and depending on the unit, might definitely) die.

I don't see anyone arguing that this doesn't happen IRL, but just because a type of behavior is common doesn't make it good or polite. Keep in mind that people aren't speculating about Martin's lifespan because they're concerned about his health, per se. They're discussing it because they want their damn book. I imagine you'd look askance if the nursing home staff spent a lot of time wondering if Mrs. Anderson had much longer to live, because you want her family to send in another check for her room and board.
