I...don't see how it's disrespectful to speculate? You can do it in a way that's dickish, of course.

I was pretty disappointed when Robert Jordan died before finishing Wheel of Time. Had I known he had a terminal disease beforehand (I don't pay a ton of attention to authors' personal lives) I would have been disappointed knowing he was going to die before finishing. None of that is disrespectful. It doesn't negate the fact that a person died and left people who loved him behind, nor does it fail to observe that.

(Fortunately for me, RJ dictated his story had someone else ended up finishing it. Not sure I see GRRM doing that under any circumstances, frankly.)

Exactly. It's not inherently disrespectful or entitled to point out that there's a fair likelihood of it happening before he finishes the series, so long as you're not pissing and moaning about how he owes it to the fans to hurry up and get A Dream of Spring written before he shuffles off his mortal coil.
