His crush wasn't retconned; when something is retconned, it means that it's removed from canon in a way where it's like it never happened at all (an example of his crush being retconned would be if in a future episode, Boyle said that he's never had a crush on a coworker before and everyone on the show acknowledged that it's true). His crush on Rosa still happened and has been referred to briefly in subsequent episodes, it's just that he got over the crush and isn't interested in her romantically anymore.

AYRT - Point taken. I really meant that once they realized how it was coming across to viewers, they had him focus his interest elsewhere. So no, not retconned, but they stopped making him so creepy.

NAYRT

I doubt it happened the way you suggest - that his character was deliberately changed due to audience reaction. Episodes are written and filmed well in advance of the airdate, and IIRC, Boyle backs off his Rosa crush fairly early on in season one. My guess is that he comes off as creepy because he's meant to, and when he finally backs off, it's because this is what a genuinely nice guy (as opposed to Nice Guy) would do.

That makes more sense because this is how the show works. They deliberately avoid a lot of cliches that make comedies so awful. There's a large, muscular black man, who does not have an anger management problem and is in fact adorably in touch with his feminine side. There's an overgrown manchild who behaves immaturely, but he's slowly learning how to grow up and take responsibility and people call him on his stupid behavior. There are TWO Latina characters, neither of whom fall into the Sassy Latina Chick stereotype. The two middle aged white guys (character types who ordinarily play much larger roles in cop shows) are supporting characters and comic relief. None of the women have been raped as part of their Tragic Backstory. There's an example of male friendship that's reciprocated and loyal. Etc. etc.

It was pretty great that they did that. It was one of the aspects of his character that bugged me originally. Also glad that they went with making he and Jake ACTUALLY friends, rather than making him like the tagalong to Jake's cool character (like it seemed it might go early on).
