My mom has walked in on them in bed together, the gf was lying on top of her mom, with her legs wrapped around her, in "a sexual pose" that my mom said was super bizarre and made her really uncomfortable. She's also seen them kissing (on the mouth) while caressing each other's faces. I mean, I haven't seen those things personally but my mom is totally trustworthy and has no reason to make that up. I've seen them walk around holding hands in public, and every family friend who has seen them together (the mom has always been invited to holidays/birthday celebrations/parties, because the gf refuses to go anywhere unless her mom is there too) has commented on how strange the situation is.

Maybe there's not anything technically sexual going on (but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is), but the kissing/lying on top of each other/holding hands in public is pretty damn weird, and there's definitely an emotional incest aspect. Anytime she's upset (which happens quite a bit, she's a spoiled brat and anytime things don't go her way she throws a fit) she'll say she "needs her mommy" and run over to be comforted by her, completely ignoring my brother. She and my brother have been together 2 years but she won't move in with him because she can't live away from her mom. Lately they've been discussing marriage, and of course, after they get married her mom will live with them.

It's just a crazy, fucked up situation.

Yeah that definitely reads as sexual to me, and also emotionally incestuous and all-around codependent, unhealthy and gross.

Yeah, it's all just crazy. Especially since my brother considers that a "normal family" (I explained it more in a comment below).

Also, what the anon above mentioned about "covert incest", that's just another word for emotional incest (I had to google it too) since you said you didn't want to look it up at work (totally understandable!).

I just really, really hope he comes to his senses eventually, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. :(
