See, I would say that when he didn't know/acknowledge that he and Yugi were separate people that all his actions were self-obsessed. In protecting and avenging Yugi, he's just protecting and avenging himself, because he's an alter-ego then and not a separate individual. As for power-hungry, it's not so much the Kaiba or Pegasus type, but he's still actively trying to expand his own influences and as the prequel series progresses, I remember Yugi blacking out more and more frequently because Yami's control over their shared body increased.

I think though, that our definitions of the two words don't match up and my definitions are broader than yours. Definitely agree with you on most of his actions stemming from pride, but I think his own assumption that he was a part of Yugi is key.

I went on about this before, should have used Malik instead, since he replaced my replaced my crush on Yami when he got introduced, since Yami Yugi at that point were less prone to killing sprees... No, you're right, Yami, in the end, wasn't motivated by the same things as some of these other psychos, or at least to a lesser extent than, say, Grimmjow or Sasuke. But when I started reading Yu-Gi-Oh, he was pretty much just out there murdering children and isn't that an attractive sign in a male?

But I wouldn't say that Agito is self-obsessed or that Mukuro is whiny either - all characteristics doesn't fit into all characters, but I still think they all can still be placed within the same loose archetype. Arguable, the rest would also have more fleshed-out motivations if they were main characters instead of being villains or rivals. And I with the other poster, that yes, a bit power-hungry and selfish he sure was, even if he was grayer than some other characters.
