That's interesting what you say about how he thought he couldn't do any better because my brother has always had self esteem issues. This is gonna sound mean and shallow (although I'm so pissed at both of them at this point that I don't really care) but she's not very pretty and it's sure as hell not her personality that would attract anyone, so I don't really know what she sees in her. Other than she was willing to date him, and like you said, maybe he thought he couldn't do any better. She's definitely manipulative so I wouldn't be surprised if she's managed to convince him that he won't find anyone better.
My mom is just dumbfounded and really hurt and doesn't know what to think about anything but my dad says he doesn't hold out much hope that he'll eventually come to his senses. Maybe I'm being unrealistically optimistic, but I see it all exploding spectacularly at some point and him (hopefully) coming to his senses when that happens. I don't know, though, maybe not.
I definitely am bothered by it but mostly I feel bad for how awful this whole thing is on my parents. :(
