Haven't read the fic, but I completely understand the appeal. I love when some of the ridiculous things about canons become perfectly understandable in the context of a tabletop campaign. One time a bunch of my friends crafted this whole narrative about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as a tabletop, and I suddenly understood everything.

Gaming, and larping especially, are so intensely much fun I wish every fandom had an au like this. (Star Wars would be perfect!) But I also like to imagine fictional characters getting into larping both because it's so fun and my Favs deserve some happiness and because having NPCs with actual powers would be SO COOL it blows my mind.

Gotta read this fic now.
