Oh no, a company got too large and decided to become a legitimate business in order to make money, pay for facilities/infrastructure, and not get sued into the ground. What terrible people.

I hope you are at least actually supporting artists and not just pirating from different sources.

LOL this!!! Sometimes I wonder if these kinds of people actually THINK about anything that comes out of their fingertips.

No shit.

You don't get why people would be pissed off by such obvious hypocrisy?

No, I don't. Anyone with half a brain would realize there would be no way for them to survive without becoming legit. They would have had to close their site down eventually.

Instead, they did the smart thing and became a legitimate business to provide people a great source to get anime.

They built their entire business base off piracy. To then turn around and go "actually lol support anime, by paying us (now that we have a large enough client base to survive)" will always rankle certain people. And the answer would I suppose be that they don't have an inherent right to survive as a business without criticism.

Criticize them I guess. But don't act like they are terrible are anything for going legit. Best decision they probably ever made.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
But fansubs and scanlations aren't about piracy. They're about making things available to people who don't speak Japanese. That's why fansubbing and scanlating got started in the first place - people who COULD speak Japanese decided to use their skills to make it so that people who couldn't could also enjoy the shows and manga they liked.

Crunchy wasn't a fansub, it was a streaming site.

Way back when crunchyroll started (around 2006-ish), they hosted primarily fansubs without permission for profit AND they charged for more access or better quality for videos. Let me repeat this, they charged for illegal episodes that other people had fansubbed. This is so many different levels of wrong.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
DA - THAT puts it in a whole new level of wrong for me then, as I didn't know this.

I was never going to give them money to begin with, seeing as I'm from a geoblocked region (lol...Japan........which has no good streaming sites of its own) but this is beyond the pale.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
All illegal streaming sites do the same: they take others people content (either official rips made by other people and/or fansubs) and get money for it.

Some charge for some stuff (usually HQ or downloads) and the ones that don't have more adds, including unavoidable click-ads and ad.fly; and the worse ones even are used for credit card scams.

At least Crunchy was never a scam and moved to a legit business model.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP's complaints are ridiculous, the money goes to the artists and that's all that matters, but those sites got big by hosting content translated by other people, they were sites leeching off other people's work. I can understand the bad blood.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have a paid subscription on crunchyroll, but I generally don't pay for hentai. It would just be way too expensive considering all the shit I read, lol.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I paid for CR so I could get 720p One Piece episodes. Best ~$8/mo I ever do spend :D

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
lolno. If anything they should just be shut down completely, but you can never change your roots.

The guy in charge of Fakku is an asshole. Back inn the day he had a store page for selling shit and his illegal works are what attracted people to it. On top of that, the store sold things he didn't have any rights to, like the mega milk shirts. He fucking made money from stealing shit, but then once people steal from him, he throws fits and aggressively dmca's people into hell. There isn't any two ways to this, he's a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'll never understand why people pay for porn.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'd only pay for it if I really liked the artist. Most stuff is just trash I never want to read again.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. There's only one artist I really like, so I bought all of her doujins for a specific pairing, but it wasn't like I was really supporting her financially considering she had stopped circulating those doujins for years, and I was buying them off ebay.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly how I feel about it, actually!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ok as long as you don't pay for Funimation's garbage either.
