Really? Do you have face blindness? Did you not hear them refer to her as Hooper?

Looking at that picture, I don't recognize that as Molly Hooper.

Also, F!S seems to think face blindness is way more common than it is.

ayrt

that was sarcasm, actually

IDK how you can miss that that was Molly Hooper

I've only seen the picture, and that doesn't really look like her to me. Maybe it is that specific picture.

Not being good at identifying individual actors as they move from one role to another =/= face blindness. I'm not sure that making jokes about people who can't do this as well as you do is kind, helpful, or necessary.

Not OP, but I had something on the stove and actually did miss the part where she walks in and is called "Hooper." It wasn't until I re-watched it a week later that I realized they did that they spelled it out for the audience and it wasn't supposed to be a thing where it slowly dawns on you that it's Molly under there.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
In fairness, every time he said her name I thought it was "Cooper" and it's been long enough since I've watched the other episodes that I quite forgot about her last name. So it was a surprise reveal to me too.

I'm terrible at faces but her voice was pretty obvious (also the fact that she showed up where we were expecting Molly and wondering how they'd deal with that). I laughed so hard when I saw it I almost fell off the couch.

*pulls up picture of Molly Hooper* *tabs back and forth between both pictures* I'm still not seeing it...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty good makeup/hair!

The reason I first cottoned on to it wasn't because I instantly recognized her, but because I was looking for everyone's Victorian equivalent and who would you expect to work in the morgue on Sherlock?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
lol I was expecting her to be there too (because like you, I figured she'd be working in the morgue)...but then I didn't think that was her at all, whoops.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
This. Right after Anderson appeared in the mortuary scene, I said to my husband, "Next we're gonna get Molly in drag" (because that was the only way Molly COULD appear in the mortuary in the 1895 'verse, and there clearly had to be someone else in charge who was competent, and who else could that be?). And sure enough, Molly-with-a-mo walks in a few beats later.

On the other hand, the makeup team did a really good job with the hair and moustache, and the actress adjusted her voice/body language/demeanour so deftly that I can see how some viewers would miss it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There were women doctors in 1895.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I did instantly. Trying too hard to be macho, and the face.

OT

Why are women disguised as men always furious onscreen, tho? I think it would be a fun thing to try passing (if consequences weren't severe as they are in some cultures, see Islamic places). Surely more than anger is required to "being" male.

I'm not trans, but I've spent most of my youth thinking about this kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's the only chance a lot of women get to express anger without getting smacked down hard for it. Passing is a secondary concern.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if they're a cis woman they *are* furious that they have to pass as male to do their job. I mean, I'm not super-attached to my gender but to have to actively pretend to be another gender would be a lot of work.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting and very good point!

I've been meaning to read some more on this subject, i.e. real life women who had to "pass" in order to do something and still do in some places in the world. There's always some anger with unfair things like this.

At the same time, it's started to seem like visual shorthand and lazy storytelling on the big/small screen when anytime a woman is trying to pass as a man she's overly aggressive and constantly angry.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I don't think it's that anger = mal,e so much as women aren't allowed to be angry, therefore anger ≠ female.

I found it blatantly clear it was a woman (and Molly soon after)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
The eyes and mouth really are a dead giveaway.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It took me a bit to realize that was Molly too. The Victorian scenes were all kinda dark light and I didn't make the connection until John made this little speech and tipped his hat. I don't like the mustache, but I thought she made a cute guy.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for making me smile. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
She gave the weirdest (girl)boner. Like, I don't know if it was the mustache or the outfit or the deep voice or the snideness, but holy shit. Get in my bed, Hooper.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ashamed to say it took me a second as well (though Holmes calling her 'Hooper' was a bit of a giveaway). I was more confused as to what they were doing with her character...like was Lou actually playing a man? Like this is a real male version of Molly in Victorian times?

It wasn't until Watson said the thing about "needing to get ahead in a man's world" I cottoned on. God, I'm slow.
