To clarify: it's a horrible crime because it's a profound violation of autonomy; it happens more to women because of the way that the patriarchal structure of society shapes our understanding of sexual behavior, sexual roles, and power.

So is mugging. so is maiming. so it kiddenapping. so it war. so is all kinds of abuse. The sense of violation is no lesser to a woman who has been blinded by an acid attach then a woman who has been raped, but Rape stands above all of those crimes. Why?

Rape isn't worse than those. It is considered worse because it happens most of the time to women and women are considered by most educated societies to be protected above all else barring children.

I didn't say it was necessarily worse than other crimes and I'm kind of leery of making that kind of comparison.

That said, it seems to me that there is something particularly personal and self-ly about the precise nature of this specific violation of autonomy. When you consider how integral it is to one's self - I think that is perhaps a reason for the reason we think of it in the distinct way that we do.

Rape isn't worse than those things, but people too frequently behave as though it is, which actually serves to prop up rape culture. http://goodmenproject.com/ethics-values/brand-what-nobody-wants-to-admit-about-rape-culture/
