If it was about the way people die, like the Rob thing you mentioned that is definitely horrific, I would understand that. It's the people who say that GRRM kills everyone that I don't get. It's not about me saying that there are more gruesome things out there. It's just that I don't think he has killed off an unusually large percentage of the cast and it confuses me when people act like he has. I'm not arguing about how horrifying any of the deaths are, just the numbers.

AYRT

Maybe because he has a thing for killing off main characters? It's not necessarily a numbers game, but an impact game.

Maybe. That just seems a little odd when combined with him also being known for doing the Cast of Thousands thing. It seems like the impact wouldn't be as big when there are so many major characters.

I'm probably the weird one here though, for pushing back on this so much. It's just that the "GRRM kills everyone" thing is all over the place and it always feels a bit off to me.

I agree, it's easier to kill characters when there are so many of them. However, I really don't think any of the popular characters are going to die. I don't for one moment think that Dany is going to die. Or Tyrion. For all the "anyone can die" hype, it's obvious that there are still main characters with plot armor.

Plot armor or popularity armor?

I mean, "hard" science fiction right now has a bigger body count.

Peter Watts, neurobiology sucks and everyone dies.
Wil McCarthy, solid state physics is awesome and everyone dies.
Alastair Reynolds, posthumanity sucks and everyone dies.
