Bi ladies are just more convenient for writers I guess. If they break up you can always hook them up with a straight character and you don't have to introduce a new lesbian.

Another bi here and I personally think it's really good. There's been years and years of lesbian romances and lesbian movies, but not so much on the bi stories. You often have to go into erotica/threesomes to get anything bi, whereas lesbians have this whole canon going back well into the 60s.

Now if they'd only start bringing in more trans women, we'd get more of identities that haven't really been represented in LGBT spaces much at all.

I'm not bitter about stories for lesbians written by lesbians being filled with (gasp) lesbians or whatever, though the cis white lesbian narrative is pretty overwhelming and hard to avoid. Sometimes I just wanna read about bi POC trans women in a relationship, and historically lesbian romances didn't give you that at all.

I feel the same. Why is this the case? There are virtually zero bisexual/homosexual male couples. In fact, virtually zero bisexual male characters on TV at all (yes, there are like three exceptions, but c'mon). More lesbians and bi men, please. And less "sexy lesbian seduces questioning woman" plots.

Don't you know if a guy touches one dick he is GAY FOREVER/s

Halt & Catch Fire has a bisexual male main character. It's not even really made to be that big of a deal. He's just... bisexual.

I think a lot of those shows started out with a token lesbian who's just supposed to exist by herself, and then they changed their minds and decided they'd get more acclaim by giving her a love interest, so they retconned a previously "straight" female character into being bi.

Yeah, I can get pretty bitter about bi characters, because a lot of times they feel like an afterthought. Like they initially have a character dating a man because default straight and then they decide later they want the diversity points. Which leads to a lot of 'confused' bi storylines. Bi characters rarely feel like they're written for bi people. Which I think shows, in the fact that there's such a lack of bi men in stories and that the word bi rarely gets used.

I wouldn't automatically hate any confused storylines, because that's a real thing that happens to some people. However, again, the key word is some. There are other bi people who never went through any major questioning period and just know and are fine with their sexuality. So I think it would be cool to see more of that.

IA that there seems to be less bi men in media though, and that sometimes the word bi isn't even used. I guess that might work for certain characters or media set in certain time periods/settings, but it isn't something that should be avoided.

(To be perfectly honest though, this thread is leaving me wondering where all the currently airing canon f/f romances are, cause I can't think of all that many. There's plenty I'm unaware of though. Off the top of my head.... Root/Shaw. Is Lost Girl still airing? I've never watched it but I know there's a bisexual main character, who had a relationship with another lady. Oh, and the cartoon from secret one.)

There's Clarke/Lexa from The 100 (another gay/bisexual ship), Stef/Lena in The Fosters (I believe they are both gay), Cosima/Delphine in Orphan Black (gay/bisexual), Tara/Denise in The Walking Dead (Tara's gay, Denise hasn't been around long enough for us to know much about her), Mary Louise/Nora in The Vampire Diaries (both gay, I believe), Eve/Annalise in How to Get Away with Murder (gay/bisexual)...Callie and Arizona are both still on Grey's Anatomy but I don't think they're a couple anymore...Nyssa and Sara both still exist in the Arrow universe but Sara left for Legends of Tomorrow so I don't know if we'll be seeing them again anytime soon...I believe Rosewood features a f/f couple and I think Mr. Robot did as well...Jessica Jones had Jeri/Pam and Jeri/Wendy...Sense8 has Nomi/Amanita (gay/bisexual) and of course, there's Orange is the New Black with multiple canon f/f...Lost Girl finished in Canada but I think they still have episodes to air in the States so Bo/Lauren still technically exists.

I'm sure I'm missing several...

Thank you for this list! I know and even like several of these pairings (Tara/Denise, Nomi/Amanita, a couple of OITNB couples though I'm so so far behind on that show), but atm of my comment I was drawing a blank.

I've only seen about two episodes of The 100 but I meant to watch it. At any rate, with that and HTGAWM the f/f pairings intrigued me, but I did attempt HTGAWM and wasn't overly fond of it, and I have no desire to watch Grey's Anatomy. Mr. Robot I've heard good things about, as well as Orphan Black. Should get around to those one day.

You should definitely give The 100 another try at some point. It's an excellent show, even without the bonus of canon lgbt characters. It takes some time to get going but it really starts to pick up in the middle of the first season and the second season was great.

Orphan Black is also good, though I saw a drop in quality after the first season. But if you enjoy the mythology and conspiracy stuff in Person of Interest, you'll likely enjoy Orphan Black since it has some of those same elements.

With The Walking Dead, I was actually rooting for Tara/Rosita, but Tara/Denise is a nice alternative :)

If you're still reading this, can I ask a question? Does it look like Clarke and Lexa have any possibility of being a canon couple? I know they've kissed, but from what I've heard of the show it seems like Clarke and Blake might be end-game. Not sure why this bothers me since I've barely watched the show and might come to love that pairing, but the thought that Clarke/Lexa might not happen kind of disappoints me and quells my interest.

But if you enjoy the mythology and conspiracy stuff in Person of Interest

I do! This is the best advertisement for OB I've seen thus far, lol.

I was actually rooting for Tara/Rosita

In the beginning I did too, but after a while it started to feel like that ship had sailed. I'm extremely pleased with Tara/Denise, if that happens. (And I'm crossing my fingers it will!)

One of the things I love about Maggie Lin on Saving Hope is that there was no questioning. There was no discussion of her sexuality whatsoever: (closeted) lesbian kisses her, she kisses back, closeted lesbian tries to save her straight engagement, lots of longing glances, end of story.

No angst, no questioning, no running back to men or seeking out another woman for proof, just business as usual.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think what bugs me about it is I can't shake the feeling that the reason it's always the women who are bi is because the writers are basically looking towards the straight male audience and going 'Look, she's going to make out with this other woman but she'd still let *you* fuck her too!' Like it's not that a character is bi because the writers want to add in some diversity or so there can be a same sex relationship, it's so the hot girl can make out with other hot girls but not alienate the hetero guys watching (think of it as the "...but not *too* gay" principle).

Modern lesbian media is still trying to figure stuff out.

Carmilla? I mean it's a webseries, not a TV show, but still.
