I honestly feel very conflicted about shipping Reylo. I'm very much a feminist, but at the same time, I've always adored exploring the darker side of the human psyche through fanfiction. I also really like Redemption fics. However, nearly all of my friends think Reylo's nothing but an abusive ship loved by primarily straight white 16-18yo girls (they only got the white part right with me and the main person who introduced me to the pairing is a WOC).

I basically made a side blog just to avoid the bullshit

B!S: I really miss when people could like fucked up ships without having to prove you're Traumatized Enough to be able to ship it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even understand where that mindset is coming from because fandom has paired fucked up characters for years.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Is... Is it really like this in fandoms other than ASOIAF? Like, a little bit of attempted torture, some possible incest, and a sword fight and they're unshipable? I don't think that I could even survive.

The key is to own your ship. If it's a problem with your friends YOU DON'T NEED FRIENDS! (though really, your friends should be able to deal with your fuck up ships. Love, no, but tolerate yes)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft, nothing more obnoxious than people being on a high horse about ~problematic~ ships. I mean, a) you're in fandom, don't be proud, sista and b) there's nothing wrong with shipping dark ships. Shipping doesn't mean you idealize it as a relationship. Shipping means you like a pairing because you find it interesting. Most of my ships are very dark and messed up, just because I'm fascinated by the dynamics. And yes, dub-con/non-con is a kink (which may or may not be my interest in a certain pairing) so whatever.

I'll be honest, the only reason I DON'T ship Reylo is because I don't like het.

What bubble do these people live in that this is an irredeemable pairing????

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
lol right? How is this pairing even that bad? it's so relatively tame at this point it could end up a canon couple. like, okay, they're enemies and he questioned her after she was taken prisoner but big whoop. as far as "bad" pairings go, this pairing is the Diet option.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There is a very vocal anti-Reylo contingent on Tumblr (and possibly elsewhere) that insists that shipping Reylo is racist, sexist, condones abuse, and is obviously incestuous.

I've seen more problematic ships in kid's cartoons!

It is such an outlying thing for Reylo shippers to get "called out" for the same kinda shipping I've seen everywhere, I almost want to assume there's a resurgence of people who have been out of fandom for a while being quick to freak out about this pairing. I'm sorry you can't get away from those people.

[personal profile] nanslice 2016-01-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's so dumb. This is probably the first time I've ever shipped a darker pairing (although mine's Kylo Ren/Poe, although I am definitely behind Kylo Ren/Rey) and the fandom is being so annoying about it. I'm blacklisting and unfollowing as needed.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-01-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, first off, you can ship what you want how you want. And second, Reylo can be shipped in so many different ways. I only ship it with Kylo as the submissive partner because I can't see him as being actually dominant even though I think he'd try. And Rey I think is very dominant. So the criticism they are making is not only wrong but it assumes that you are shipping it with Kylo taking advantage of her. And that isn't necessarily the case.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
ah yes! i ship Reylo and this is TOTALLY how i see it!!!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Do we need another lesson on the things feminists are allowed to like?

Hint: It's everything that is fictional.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, a loud number of feminists don't share that view.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel bad, OP. I actually also ship a fucked up het ship that's pretty objectively worse than Reylo, and none of the friends I made through shipping the pairing are straight. It's annoying when people make these broad generalizations that everyone who finds fucked up het pairings interesting is cishet and will ship any het pairing they find.
elaminator: (Hannibal: Hannibal/Will)

[personal profile] elaminator 2016-01-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it isn't any worse than Hannibal/Will (actually, it's probably fluffy in comparison), so I can't and won't judge you, lol. I don't ship Rey and Kylo, I'm into Finn/Rey and there wasn't enough between Rey and Kylo to entice me, but clearly on some level I get the appeal of fucked up pairings. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't like it; no one is obligated to share your interest in it, and they certainly don't have to approve, but you're still entitled to ship it. Shipping a dark pairing isn't the end of the world.

[personal profile] nightscale 2016-01-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't actively ship Reylo(could probably read fanfic for it though) but I've got tons of messed-up pairings because I like fucked-up dynamics as much as healthy and happy ones. It doesn't mean I condone the messed-up shit irl, I just enjoy in the safe place of fiction.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship them, but I used to ship Grima/Eowyn BIG time after The Two Towers movie came out. (Okay, I still sort of ship them, in the redemption or the "what could have been" sense.) So I know what that's like, to be the person with the creepy ship. XD

I wouldn't give a hoot about people shipping it if it wasn't so obnoxiously *everywhere* on Tumblr at least.

In every SW-related Tumblr tag imaginable (completely unrelated character tags included) you can't scroll half a page without running into it - and I wish it was just fic or art or something, but the most annoying part are the endless parentage arguments. I mean, I'm sorry, but you're not endearing yourselves to anyone with all those outlandish theories trying to prove she's not a member of the Skywalker clan - not saying she 100% is either, but you seriously think it'd be good storytelling (or true to the Star Wars feel) to have her be a Obi-Wan's great-niece's stepmother's cousin twice removed or something just so you could have a possibility for a non-incestuous heroine/villain romance? Please.

tl;dr: Ship it as much as you like, but please tone down the obnoxious a little - and same goes to the haters, you're not helping by fueling the drama.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember people having highly charged debates that would get ugly at times, but it never came down to personal insults or insinuations like "racist" "rape apologist", yikes. Why does shipping have to be like waging warefare. Being right about canon is one thing, but why do people try so hard to show that they have moral high ground in shipping, of all things? Like, really?

I'm with you, OP. The anti Reylo people are really annoying ... though I'm also annoyed by the OMG THEY ARE TOTALLY NOT RELATED Reylo shippers because, yeah, I'm 99.9% sure they are.

There are some good shippers though, so I hope you have found them.
