I use Sai. I do fanart and tend to take colors directly from the source material, so I can't really give good advice on that, sorry.

Music-wise, I find that the kind of music I listen to helps certain kinds of pictures. More mellow music helps with more solemn pieces, while happy music helps me get things done faster and inspires me to use brighter colors. I listen to game soundtracks, remixes of game music, classic rock, and a lot of anime theme music.

That works similarly for me. I'll sometimes be working on something sad and use sad music. Usually poppy is my default though,
