The Almond Tree. Partly because of that creepy song the bird-boy sings. I first read the story when I was like 9 years old and that fucking song embedded itself into my brain. It's so disturbing and evocative and 9-yr-old me absolutely LOVED it.

It was my mother who murdered me
It was my father who ate of me
It was my sister Marjory
Who all my bones in pieces found
Them in a handkerchief she bound
And laid them under the almond tree
Kywitt kywitt kywitt I cry
Oh what a beautiful bird am I!
