It's short, if anyone is interested in reading it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)I have that story in a book of different folk tales. I liked that on a lot.
Another tale I liked there is "The war of the birds" from Scotland. Or the Polish tale about a soldier who got a backpack from Jesus, trapped Death and beat up the Devil so bad he wasn't allowed into Hell.

Re: Lesser Known Fairy Tales

Proving that it's not only women who can't stop themselves from nosing around where they aren't supposed to go...

This is the only version I found in English, no idea if it's any good. From what I can see from glancing over it, I can see it's a bit different than the version I knew., but here you go.

It's not your average Grimm tale that has the count's daughter whip out a pistol and attempt to shoot the villain. I mean, it doesn't work, but all credit to the lady for trying.

It was my father who ate of me
It was my sister Marjory

Them in a handkerchief she bound
And laid them under the almond tree
Kywitt kywitt kywitt I cry

I'd love to have my own copies of all those books, someday. I love the art on all of them, and I love the variations between cultures. :o

An episode of "The Storyteller" was based on it, with shades of Cinderella as well.

Re: Lesser Known Fairy Tales
A soldier is discharged from the army and the cheapskate king refuses to pay his pension. The soldier is forced to go wandering and finds himself hired by a witch, who tries to work him to death. She tells him to go down into the well to fetch her blue light, but he senses she's about to try to kill him, so he stays at the bottom of the well and lights his pipe with the blue light. A magical dwarf appears when the light is lit, and the dwarf obeys his commands.
First, the soldier orders him to take him out of the well and kill the witch, and then the soldier goes to town.
He commands the dwarf to kidnap and hypnotize the princess and make her do menial labor until she's exhausted at dawn. The princess tells the king (the same cheapskate king from earlier) that she's exhausted and had a weird dream about doing menial labor, and the king tells her to put peas in her shoe so that they'll spill out all around town and leave a trail, but the dwarf tattles to the soldier to tell him about this plan.
Eventually, though, the soldier is captured, and the king has him set for execution. The soldier asks for one last light of his pipe and summons the dwarf, who appears with a stick and beats the shit out of the king.
EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER
THE END
