Seriously? When you're LITERALLY RECOMMENDING A LITTLE-KNOWN SHOW THAT YOU WISH WAS BETTER-KNOWN IN YOUR SECRET, you STILL somehow find it too difficult to mention the show's fucking title?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Static Shock. I love that show too and I definitely wish there was more of it (and more fic...)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Also the screencap seems to be cropped because reverse image searching turned up nothing.

Ease up on the secreting there OP.

a little hostile there. It's Static Shock. I wouldn't say it's little known. But a different screenshot would have been better for clarity.

Static Shock

It's Static Shock nimrod.

Right? I didn't know what it was, either. You'd think including the fandom would be a relatively low effort thing they could do.

Okay... but Vergil's not gay?

Not saying that as an excuse to not ship them, but I think we can do better for gay representation instead of "gay guy lusts after (or converts) straight guy".

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
you must be new to fandom

Static Shock! I never managed to catch it all to the end but I loved watching it, I loved these two as well but I never knew that Richie was gay in the original canon, that would have been cool to have in the cartoon but it's never easy to get stuff like that in kids shows.

I would love to see it get a reboot, if they did it right. Cartoons still aren't really welcoming gay characters though...we might have a better chance of getting a gay!Richie reboot in a few years or a decade.

I loved this show.

THE WB ABSOLUTELY WOULDNT LET THEM CROSS THE GAY LINE - THIS IS A FACT

[personal profile] dancinbutterfly 2016-01-17 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
So I had the honor of meeting Dwayne McDuffie at San Diego ComicCon the year before he died. He did a panel on Characters of Color in Comics. It was magnificent and you may even be able to find it online. Besides fangirling at him like a fucking crazy person, I asked him if Richie was in love with Virgil because it felt like he was or if I was just delusional because I knew in the comics he was meant to be gay. He told me that yes, he was but that the network wouldn't, and I swear to god this is a direct quote "let them go there." He said, and this part *IS* paraphrasing, that with Richie the Static Shock team did what they could to give him gay representation but that the network wouldn't let them go as far as they wanted to or let him come out and that they would have liked to have done more but they did all they could.

So OP, know that you were totally right. :D

You just reminded me of the episode where he goes back in time to try and save his mother. *tears*

This 'secret' is actually just a series advertisement, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...Well, it worked. I don't have much of substance to add as I'd never heard of this until now, but it sounds really interesting and I'm gonna go look it up. Thanks OP!

I haven't watched this show, but it sounds pretty different from Steven Universe. SU's big things are war and 1984-esque social structures, occasionally with sexism and body issues mixed in. I don't think it would ever tackle something like gang violence.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I freaking loved Static Shock! He was my favorite superhero as a kid and I remember shipping Virgil/Richie before I knew what shipping was. I just really wanted them to hold hands and get ice cream and kiss.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna prefer SU for very selfish reasons and that's that it has lesbians (who aren't fap fodder) and not more gay pretty boys. >> You do you, tho, OP.

I wasn't a huge fan of this show, but I totally shipped those two as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because there can only be one show with representation! The nerve of people who ignored the first one, being happy about any others that come after it! Even if they were too young when the first one was showing, or its plot didn't interest them so they never watched it to find out about the representation in the first place, or they didn't care enough about the plot even knowing about the representation, or... yeah, you could have saved yourself the time and just said you're butthurt that other shows are more popular than your fave.

What I would give for a Static Shock reboot. Or movie. Or Netflix series. I loved this show so much.

I fear this may be as close as I ever get.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Static Shock.

Though re: fandom and representation of issues. Fandom tends to have a very SHORT attention span and they like to give more credit then is due. Like SU is hardly the first to tackle a lot of things it is tackling, but it gets the credit.

It reminds me how much credit people tried to give Frozen for being feminist when there were actual *Disney* movies that had done all the things Frozen has done.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-18 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that separates Steven Universe from Static Shock is that SU uses subtlety and nuance to address really complicated and adult issues, while SS uses all of the subtlety of a hammer. Plus, just saying, but shows that addressed issues like gang violence were really rather common in those days. The "very special episode" concept was a very 90's thing that has largely been dropped by now (latest one I can remember is TROQ from Teen Titans). Static Shock was really only slightly daring for its time.
