Re: CW Rape
First this is assuming men can never be raped. Which is untrue. So would a male rape survivor be exempt of this rule, or is it just men?
Second, what about the myriad of female fanfic writers who write noncon? Do they need to prove to you they were raped to make it okay? Or is it different simply because of their genitalia?
I'm pretty sure it's your statement that is bullshit, tbh.

Re: CW Rape
(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)Which isn't saying one side or the other has it easier, just that a male victim writing from personal experience may well not write something that's authentic to a female victim's experience, or vice versa.
Re: CW Rape/suicide
Fortunately this is not something that happened to me, but I know from experience that I have very different experiences of depression/anxiety/being suicidal than some people I talked to who went through the same - even those who were the same gender and similar age.
Hell, I was told off on this very comm for the way I talked about my own suicide attempt...by someone else who had those feelings.
My point is this: the way someone deals with trauma and generally awful things is always personal. There is no right and no wrong way, but it's almost always going to piss someone off.
As for being authentic - that's the whole thing about being a writer. Trying to imagine it and empathize. I've never killed someone, but I've written people who have. There are writers who never lost a child, who wrote about that loss beautifully.
To expect a writer to have experienced everything they write exactly as they do is just silly.
It also depends very much how they're writing it; Are they writing it in a historical r a fantasy setting? Then "realistic for today" doesn't matter either way etc.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 05:04 am (UTC)(link)hmmmm..... like men gonna admit that. i assume men don't share their own misery, especially towards society. (i been totally rude right here)
