Re: CW Rape

So I'm not usually one of those "Whites should never write books about blacks" or "Straight people shouldn't write about gay people" etc. I believe by and large most human experiences are somwhat relatable to everyone with empathy, whether they have lived the experience or not.

BUT

If you are a male writer, you write about women all you want, but you do need to stop writing and never start again if you want to write about a rape. It is not something that anyone who has no experienced it can ever understand and you trying to turn it into a profit with your shitty half-assed attempt at telling our story? That's bullshit. Stop that.

Re: CW Rape

Does this only apply to fictional female victims, or...?

Re: CW Rape

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
This post seems to be based on the assumption that only women are ever the victims of rape, and with respect, I can't agree with that.

Re: CW Rape

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
But men can get raped?

Re: CW Rape

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they do. And because of ignorant people like you they have difficulty getting the after care they need and support from the criminal justice system.

What are you attacking me for? I made the comment as OP seem to assume that only women can get raped. I'm saying men can too.

Wait....this means that if a woman wants to write about rape, she has to be raped. Because unless a woman has actually experienced rape, she can't understand it.

Shit! That means if someone wants to write about murderers they have to murder someone. IF SOMEONE WANTS TO WRITE ABOUT SOMEONE DYING THEY HAVE TO DIE FIRST!

Brings new meeting to ghost writer.

No wait, doesn't someone have to actually be murdered first before they can write about murder?

I guess that means women who want to write about rape have to hire someone to rape them.

Re: CW Rape

Women do live with rape every day, tho. The threat, the fear, the echos of that violence that surround us everywhere we go. Rape is a part of womens lives in this world. Hence why we have the term "Rape Culture".

Quote from OP: "I believe by and large most human experiences are somwhat relatable to everyone with empathy, whether they have lived the experience or not."

Your IF SOMEONE WANTS TO WRITE ABOUT SOMEONE DYING THEY HAVE TO DIE FIRST! spiel is cute, but OP clearly said that they think that "you can't write it if you haven't experienced it" applies only to rape. (Hint: the clue was in the capslock BUT.)

I don't even agree with OP but the lack of reading comprehension sometimes on this comm is so annoying. People are so eager to shit on people they don't even care if the things they object to are things the people they shit on have actually said.

Okay,

First this is assuming men can never be raped. Which is untrue. So would a male rape survivor be exempt of this rule, or is it just men?

Second, what about the myriad of female fanfic writers who write noncon? Do they need to prove to you they were raped to make it okay? Or is it different simply because of their genitalia?

I'm pretty sure it's your statement that is bullshit, tbh.

Re: CW Rape

I think OP's position is ridiculous, but if they're operating on the premise that experience is essential to writing about rape, a male survivor's lived experience would still be very, very different from a female survivor's. (Not necessarily physically so much as in how they're treated if they report, and how social expectations and their own sense of self and shame interact.)

Which isn't saying one side or the other has it easier, just that a male victim writing from personal experience may well not write something that's authentic to a female victim's experience, or vice versa.

Re: CW Rape

rape victims need to be able to discuss their life Without outing themselves as survivors. therefore saying anyone can talk about rape is better then saying only a few people can talk about rape.
