I've shipped both best friend ships and rival ships, they are both a whole different experience that appeals to different people.

I notice more relaxed people tend to like the best friend ships whereas energetic people like the rival ships. Depending on my mood I could go either way.

Though it doesn't surprise me why the energetic people would find the relaxed ships boring, or why the relaxed people find the energetic ships too intense.

Eh, I'll be honest, I find the "rival ships"...not intense at all, more like just "completely not romantic" I suppose. It depends on what kind of 'rivals' we're talking about, for instance I'm all for Kageyama/Hinata from Haikyuu!! but not Kuroo/Tsukishima. I feel like Kageyama/Hinata is more of a friendly rivalry, with an emphasis on the friends part, while Kuroo/Tsukishima is more of a true rivalry in that Tsukishima canonly doesn't like Kuroo, and I find shipping people who actively dislike one another kind of squicky, which is where my personal issues come with most rival pairings. When your pairings canonly fight more than they can speak civilly? Meh. Or worse, if they're actually violent/have physical fights (whether it be schoolyard beat-em-ups or epic samurai fights with swords and the aim is to kill your opponent)? Euuughghguh no.

On the other hand, most of the friendship pairings I ship are quite energetic and high-octane, both because of the characters themselves and the settings they're in.

I just wanted to write this because there are definitely other reasons why some people might not ship rival pairings beyond it being "too intense", that's kind of pigeonholing a vast array of different relationships as being "boring" solely because the characters consider one another friends, which I think is a little bizarre once you think it through for a minute.
