OP here, and LOTR. I can appreciate the world Tolkein built and the context of the world, but I can't get through his writing, so the movies are a good compromise. I do wish they'd kept in some of the poetry, though IIRC they may have had one or two songs? That's actually very important in the greater context, and anyway, he was a good poet. Otherwise, yeah, the books bore me to death but the films drive home the point I know Tolkein was trying to make.

I liked reading LOTR but I skipped all the songs and poems 'cuz life's too short.

I STILL haven't gone back and read the part with Tom Bombadill.

Honestly, yeah, I like the LOTR movies better than the books. I still haven't gotten through the books (much to my mother's disappointment - she's a big Tolkien nerd and hoped to raise me as one, too.)

The Hobbit, however - I have to say, the book is 1000x better.

AYRT - Oh, the Hobbit was terrible. I only saw the first movie of the trilogy. In that case I loved the book, actually.

The Hobbit isn't my favorite, but the movies were so disappointingly bad that yes, the book is waaaaay better, no question.

While I love the books, I can appreciate that they're not everyone's speed. However, I would argue that the movies did not actually drive home the point of what Tolkien was trying to make (I mean it depends on what point you think the movies got, because there were several they really missed the boat on).

Same, really. I loved The Two Towers and that's the book I just can't get through at all.

I love Tolkien's writing so I can't say I like them better, but these are still my favorite films. I think PJ and co did a great job of translating the story and universe to the big screen, and that it introduced Tolkien's world to new people. That's always a good thing, and even if it wasn't a completely 'straight up' adaption (which would've been impossible), and it has faults, they're still damn good films.

Word on that - I think the movies were good, and a way for people who can't get through the book to learn the story.

I read the books, but before the movies I couldn't get through Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. After the movies I was able to read those parts.
My Mum can't get through the books at all - at best the last time she tried to read The Hobbit, she got as far as the trolls. She loves the movies however and the bits where they differ from the books I can relate to her.
