Word on that - I think the movies were good, and a way for people who can't get through the book to learn the story.

I read the books, but before the movies I couldn't get through Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. After the movies I was able to read those parts.
My Mum can't get through the books at all - at best the last time she tried to read The Hobbit, she got as far as the trolls. She loves the movies however and the bits where they differ from the books I can relate to her.
