Okay, here's the thing. I got started on conventional fandom in the Friendship is Magic fandom. And in the FIM fandom, it's okay to ship a canon character with an OC. Sometimes quite popular, even. I fnd it bizarre that other fandoms have such a stick up their collective butt about it.

That's what I love about the fandom actually. People are totally willing to give OCs a chance as long as they're a good character. I recall reading a fic where there was a a major supporting character that I liked and fit so well in the story.

It wasn't until I finished reading it that it occurred to me "that was an OC".

I think it's because most have a kneejerk reaction that an OC shipped with a canon character would be a self-insert Sue. I know I have it sometimes, specially when it comes to FF.net where I automatically filter out OC characters.

For me it depends on which canon character they're shipped with. I only really side eye OCs shipped with the MAIN main characters and even then it...sorta depends.

Canon character is pretty broad. Technically if a character shows up in one episode they're a canon character. But it'd be kinda ridiculous to auto assume an OC shipped with a character that was in one episode or two is going to be a Sue if the story is otherwise good.

I'm not saying it's wrong that people don't like reading it, but the automatic assumption that an author is always basing an OC they pair with someone who's a canon character on themselves is kind of silly, imo

I love the Hellboy movies. Abe was never my favorite but I do like him. I'm lukewarm about the romance for him. I can take it or leave it in fic but I'd never read Abe/Nuala just on its own.

I happen to like OCs, especially as you describe it. I like well thought out characters. I like romance. I like expanding the world of movies/books. I generally don't read Main Character/OC fic but I've read ones that were additions in other stories and I ended up really liking their romance.

If you don't want to share, that's cool, but I'm sure there's someone else out there who feels like you and who would enjoy your fic.

Seconding this. There's at least 2 of us who'd like to read this, OP!

+3!

I am curious now if the OP read the comics. I had a huge crush on comic book Abe and thought movie Abe was terrible by comparison. I shipped Abe and Liz in the comics, until they both became independently too depressed/unstable for development in their relationship to make sense. (Not that depressed and unstable people can't fall in love, it just didn't seem like it would be high on either of their priority lists.)

OP, swooping in late!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I actually did read the comics. :) I agree with you on Liz/Abe, there were some moments where I really felt like they could have been good for one another, but...ehhh yeah it kind of broke down there at the end.

For me personally the Hellboy movies feel more like a self-contained universe. I like that I'm able to play with all sorts of different lore and nothing is there to contradict it. While I love the comics, the world was just a bit too expansive for me to feel comfortable playing in it, if that makes sense.

I really disliked the relationship in that movie too; and I completely understand the desire to see a favourite character (especially a favourite character you have a thing for) in a relationship that doesn't annoy you!

Don't keep your fic to yourself because some people might dislike it. Just warn for it and they have nothing to bitch about.

If people kept fic to themselves because there's someone out there who thinks that fic should be kept to onself, we wouldn't have any fic. I've seen someone say that shipfic in general shouldn't be allowed on fic archives and that's like 85% of fanfic.

ha, my first thought too!

They're both very pretty.

I do think Thane is prettier (I prefer his color palette, lol) but part of that might be simply because I'm used to looking at him and I'm super fond of the character. Either way, the character in the film is a cool design!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
You could always rewrite, make the whole thing original, and publish it. It might take some work. On the other hand, it sounds as though this is something you've written for yourself and maybe don't want to do anything else with the writing, either fandom or original. That's cool, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I does sound a bit like you have a crush on the character, were jealous of his canon love interest and created a self insert as a new love interest for him...

OP, shaking his head

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like my eyes rolled so far back in my head I can feel my eyeballs tickling my brain meat.

This actually couldn't be further from the truth. I thought Nuala's character design was gorgeous actually, I had a purely aesthetic crush on both her and her brother.

But the romance in this movie was fucked. First off, Nuada and Nuala were played by both actors as having a very, very obvious incestuous subtext to their relationship, which is why it felt really damn weird to me when Nuala suddenly just gained an insta-crush on Abe because he was nice to her for like a minute, meanwhile it's implied that Nuala would have totally banged her brother if only he hadn't gone rogue.

Second, Nuala's character personality was...less than pleasing. She was basically the most painfully cardboard cut-out out of the "Damsel In Distress" trope you could imagine. It was kind of painful to watch, especially because her kick-ass design could have hinted at a much stronger character.

Third, spoiler alert, she's dead at the end of the movie. I technically don't even have to justify making an OC for a character that is unattached as of the end of the movie, but I still wanted to note that the lackluster romance is one of the reasons I was originally inspired to write the OC, even if the OC has become more to me than that. Also, the OC looks, and acts nothing like me, and is a creature of the night, a demonic deity of sorts. We're not talking blonde, blue eyed Mary Sue who can do no wrong territory, I've been pretty harsh on myself about a character that is probably never going to see the light of day simply because I wanted to do the original justice.
