I really hope they keep the Compilation stuff out of it as much as possible. I'll suck it up and deal if they don't, and I'd actually somewhat like to see shout-outs to minor details (like a Kunsel cameo, for example, or some of the locations), but beyond that is unnecessary and can only fuck up the narrative.

The original game has fantastic writing and design. Even in the decades since there've been very few games that are on that level. And it's convoluted enough w/out adding in extra Compilation crap. There's, what, seven or eight MAJOR plot twists already? I mean, the game lays out three separate contradictory versions of the Nibelheim incident, and even then key details of that (like what happens to Zack or who the new townspeople are) are only found in hidden cutscenes and easily missed side content.

Plus, quite a few Compilation changes really weaken the narrative. Like Genesis being in Nibelheim, or the entire existence of Project G (since FF7 firmly establishes that Sephiroth was the ONLY one to undergo the process, and he tells you this directly), or Sephiroth choosing to jump into the reactor just for funzies rather than being thrown off by Cloud. Or Aerith being a twee cutie-pie rather than a sassy, forceful city-girl.

The OG wasn't fantastic in writing or design, tho. It was a clusterfuck at times, it never took itself too seriously, etc. It's never been as great as OG fans like to think it is. Seriously, replay it.

And the thing with Aerith is she's only ever sassy and forceful when she needs to be. Otherwise, you know, she's still the girl who helped Cloud out when he fell through the ceiling and was super sweet to Marlene. She's both cutie-pie AND sassy and I'm personally tired of fandom erasing one part of her because they need things to be as simple as possible without any dimensions to it.

Just replayed it two months ago, actually. And it's a bit of a clusterfuck, but much of that is due to the graphical limitations of the time. Things like the big reveal that you've been chasing Jenova rather than Sephiroth are really easy to miss b/c the reveal animation is some crazy screen flashing rather than the sort of crazy grotesque transformation that'd be possible today. And then Tifa and Cloud spell it all out, but it's trumped in the player's mind by the crater scene five minutes later. And a lot is lost with the low-poly models, like Cloud beating Aeris after the temple while mini-Cloud freaks the fuck out.

None of that is a flaw with the writing, though. Being confusing or complicated isn't the same as being bad.

The fact that it never takes itself too seriously is what makes it good. It allows for breathing room around all the mindfucks and makes the characters more believable when they're wtfing over the same things the player is.

As for Aerith, I never saw her as being particularly cute but I think that's down to individual interpretation.

Yeah, I have to agree. There were a lot of things about the Compilation that muddy the original storyline. I think Sephiroth works a lot better as the Only One, also, without Genesis and Angeal.
Maybe if they did some revamping to make it all make sense, but... I don't really trust them to do a good job of it, so I'd rather they stuck with the original. It works, okay.

And +1000000000000 about Aerith.
