I used to have a Whovian friend who would bitch all the time about musicals because it's "unrealistic" for people to just burst out into song. When I pointed out that it was no more unrealistic than a human-looking alien traveling through time in a police box and stopping multiple invasions on earth, her response was that she can suspend her disbelief for things that aren't stupid. This kind of thing goes a long way towards explaining why I say I used to have this friend.

Yeah, that's kind of a ridiculous argument from your friend. If I were to use "it's unrealistic!" as my reason for not watching/reading something, I would have very little left to enjoy, I think. And I'm not even an expert on the musical genre, but I feel like people who make the complaint your friend did about them are kind of...missing the point of why musicals are like that.

And hey, sometimes people do like randomly singing in public in real life, so it's not THAT farfetched a concept :p. Maybe they're not leading an entire street full of people in a spontaneous sing-along, no, but still...

That honestly sounds like she's trying to make an excuse for why she doesn't like it. It's perfectly okay to say "I just don't like musicals; the singing annoys me/throws me off/whatever", and I have to agree with anon who says she's missing the point if she's calling it unrealistic. Nobody is trying to claim it's realistic to burst into song two dozen times during a narrative; it's just a way of telling a story.
