I wonder if an FFVII remake is something the fans can really ignore though.

It depends on whether you engage with fandom or not.

I love FFVII, and avoid the fandom like the plague. I haven't even gotten around to playing Crisis Core (there's no hurry, so I'll get there eventually!). I suspect that people like me won't have any trouble ignoring the remake, and it won't affect our idea of what constitutes "canon".

Hell, the version I played used the name Aeris, so that's what she'll always be in my mind. I realise it would make three-quarters of the fandom call for my head, but it doesn't bother me. Sometimes if you love something for what it meant to you, it's safer to just give fandom a wiiiiiide berth.
