I have a feeling too that he wanted that last album to be judged on its own merits -- even though it was revealed that he'd intended it as a 'goodbye' to his fans -- and not given any pity reviews.

For me, the fact that he lived just long enough to see Blackstar top the UK charts and be critically acclaimed somehow eases my grief over his passing.

What helps give me a chuckle in the face of losing him is realizing that it would be so like him to not only hang on to see "Blackstar" become a success, but I can see him snickering to himself and wanting to make it to 69.
