Transcript: I used to be part of a fandom aimed at people much younger than me. I found a group of fans my age.

We had a chip on our shoulder about how we were so much more mature and intelligent than everyone else in the fandom. I wish I could say I was above that b.s. but honestly... I was not.

Then I started to notice something. Most of us were unemployed or stuck in shitty retail jobs. Most didn't have many friends outside the group. All of us were single. Some were university drop outs.
All of us were unhappy. And yet...

We felt superior because we thought we were better than a bunch of tween fangirls.

It made me question why I'm part of fandom.]

Dead end job, University dropout. I am married and have lots of non-fandom friends though, so I guess that's something.

I am funemployed at the moment, but I've been in and out of work since I was 15 and a job has never interfered with my fandom fun. Probably split about even on friends that are in fandom or not. Single (but dating), graduated college.

Single, and I have a lot of non-fandom friends (actually, upon reflection, I don't have any fandom friends right now) who I adore but there are some things I would only tell a bosom friend, if I had one, which I don't.

Zero. Master's degree, healthy social group, long term relationship, and full time employment over 70K/year with plenty of room for advancement.

I'm also very physically fit, if we're going to lump all nerd stereotypes together.

I was definitely most active in fandom during a period of unemployment and depression, though... And honestly, I don't think that's a bad thing. It gave me something to look forward to every day, and forced me to socialize with other people, even if it was over relatively trivial topics.

Most of those. I started getting heavily into fandom because I was scared of college and sick all the time, but my life is now at a point where fandom is becoming less of a healthy coping mechanism and more of a crutch (not that it was all that healthy back then, I abandoned any chance of real success in order to hide in fandom). I couldn't figure out why my life had stopped...working...until I realized that I was approaching everything as if *fandom* was my first priority. Fandom's not real life. It's supposed to be a fun thing you do when you're finished with your grown up responsibilities for the day

Like drinking.

I have few friends period, and I'm single (but probably asexual&aromantic, does that make a difference?). I dropped out of a graduate program, but later finished a less prestigious one. My job is good, though I was dragged kicking and screaming into applying for it.

Unemployed, and while I wouldn't say I met most of my friends through fandom, they tend to be fannish in some capacity or other. I'm not single and I did go to college, though, so half?

Single (by choice) waitress with a degree in japanese studies (also had a scholarship last year). Got a lot of friends around the world but not too many I can meet and hang out with regularly (only 6 are in my home town rn)
I'm just stuck in my home country trying to collect money to return to school in Japan... It's been a boring year so far and it's going to be worse.

4-year degree, have job that isn't retail, and while most of my friends are people I've met through fandom, I wouldn't call them "fandom friends" because fandom isn't the only thing that binds us.

Still single, and being in a relationship isn't even on my radar right now.

I'm newly unemployed, but I was working a retail job prior to that. Also single, and I only ever did one year of community college, so...yeah.

Do have a small group of non-fandom friends, though.

None of the above. But I would never presume to judge anyone who fell into any of those categories, and it's hardly like those things are exclusive to fanthings.

Retail job (part time)/some non-fandom friends, some fandom friends (does it count if you met people and ended up liking the same things, vs. meeting people in fandom?), single, in college rn (wonder if that "balances" the retail job.)

Ouch. I was in a similar situation (minus having the fandom friends + irl all went away to other countries for college and we stopped talking). It's hard getting out of it, but you took the first step of acknowledging that you have a problem and using fandom as a way to cope with your current situation. What you do from there on is up to you, so best wishes and best of luck for you, OP!

Single, no real friends. Other than my cats. Good job, Master's degree, a few more years till I can retire.
