Half the population doesn't read for pleasure, period. If you'd rather the YA and fanfic fans joined them, then judge away I guess.

eh, reading is not necessarily a more "noble" way to consume media, aka
reading is not worthwhile just because it's reading.

maybe it'll make you more proficient in reading, but you can say the same for movies. "reading" visual clues, body language etc.

I'm not saying it's more noble/worthwhile. I am saying it's not as popular a format as others things like TV or movies, and we don't need to drive any more people away from it.

Trash and treasures know no genre line.

you mean it's not as popular and that OP should mourn their loss for the sake of the whole format, but I don't see it.

A YA reader or author more or less only matters to other YA readers and authors.

A YA reader or author more or less only matters to other YA readers and authors.

There are things in the format that are common factors for all the genres. Even if I don't read YA, and a YA fan doesn't read what I read, we can still talk about book-things. They still buy books, and a lot of authors are multi-genre--they may publish both YA novels and adult novels.

+1, people (who aren't nerds!) come to my house and are astonished at "all the books"...when they've only seen the first two bookcases. Reading for fun is just not a thing that many people do, despite the self-selecting group here online. So anyone who "just" reads YA and fan-fiction is a big step towards being my kind of person!

Evidence please?

It's actually a quarter of the population.
