Half the population doesn't read for pleasure, period. If you'd rather the YA and fanfic fans joined them, then judge away I guess.

10/10 of the last books I've read were about anthropology or finance.

I would assume the YA and fanfic reader's tastes are probably more interesting than mine.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, fuck you, you elitist prig.

And I say this as a person who doesn't particularly enjoy YA and doesn't read much fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
All I read is nonfiction and comics. Where would you (or anyone else feeling judge-y) put me?

I think YA books have some better marketing (sorry, don't want to read something with a half naked woman on the cover). Also, I'm stuck in the lurch between the typical YA protagonist age and the adult protagonist age. So, I see nothing wrong with reading YA. Especially since some of them, or even the kids books authors, tend to try toward more creativity. Or, at least, easier to find creativity.

When I was in the age range YA books target, I usually had too much school assigned reading and other work to read anything for fun. Now I'm too busy enjoying the time I have to read as much of what I want, when I want, to care about being judged.

Sure most of the YA I've read's been pretty mediocre, but I don't know, most of the litfic I've read has been mid-life crisis-related, navel-gazing dreck.

I'm beginning to suspect that people between 25 and 45 aren't supposed to read books or something.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
In addition to fanfic, I also read a fuckton of classic literature, plus a lot of modern "high brown" literary fiction. And even I think you sound like a judgmental and small-minded piece of work, OP.

1. Not everyone leans hard towards literary interests. There are plenty of people who are smart as hell, but who aren't big readers outside of the reading they need to do in order to be well-versed in their field of work/study. Being literary-minded is not some universal measure of intelligence or maturity.

2. Many people work hard all day, and when they are done working they are exhausted and the last thing they want is to spend their minimal free time working their way through a book they don't enjoy.

The only thing I've had to time to read in the past year or so is fanfiction and the novelization of The Force Awakens.
But lol please continue to judge me for not indulging and reading "proper" literature like yourself OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the OP is stupid, but are there really people who read nothing but YA?
Every single YA book I've ever managed to sit and read though has the same basic plot and characters and boring hetero love triangle. I would imagine it would get dull and repetitive fast.
I know there are some YA books that differ from this formula and are supposed to be really good, but I know it's not the majority.
