In addition to fanfic, I also read a fuckton of classic literature, plus a lot of modern "high brown" literary fiction. And even I think you sound like a judgmental and small-minded piece of work, OP.

1. Not everyone leans hard towards literary interests. There are plenty of people who are smart as hell, but who aren't big readers outside of the reading they need to do in order to be well-versed in their field of work/study. Being literary-minded is not some universal measure of intelligence or maturity.

2. Many people work hard all day, and when they are done working they are exhausted and the last thing they want is to spend their minimal free time working their way through a book they don't enjoy.
