Well, I mean, you can definitely argue that switching from chopping the kid's arm off straight to 'join me, my son, and we can rule together' is a bit abusive. In the sense that Vader knew Luke was his son, wanted Luke to come with him and be family with him, but prefaced that conversation with casual maiming to make Luke sit still and listen to him. If you want a family relationship with someone, it's generally not advisable to start by chopping their limbs off.
