Or maybe we can separate the question of how the relationship is depicted from whether or not it's okay to ship? You don't have to be motivated by ship wars to find it interesting to talk about.

Kylo Ren is an unhealthy dude and the kind of shit that he does in the film wrt Rey really is not adequately summed up as "things that happen in war"

like come on dude, you can ship it all you want but it's really hard for me to conceptualize a way that relationship would play that wouldn't be abusive unless you radically change everything to do with Ren

Because how you treat your enemy while at war is different than how you would treat someone not at war?

During the Civil War families were at war with each other. Before and after the war (if they survived) they were not.

Well, I mean, you can definitely argue that switching from chopping the kid's arm off straight to 'join me, my son, and we can rule together' is a bit abusive. In the sense that Vader knew Luke was his son, wanted Luke to come with him and be family with him, but prefaced that conversation with casual maiming to make Luke sit still and listen to him. If you want a family relationship with someone, it's generally not advisable to start by chopping their limbs off.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with this.

I have no issue with the ship but JFC, is it just one person who keeps regurgitating this point? "Abusive" isn't the right word choice, but couching everything in "just doing what people fighting wars do" doesn't erase that it's violence especially when Kylo Ren is one of the highest perpetrators of that war, and yeah, that's going to affect the tone of the relationship for some people.

I agree. Don't think abusive is the right word, but there's certainly still violence happening and even if it's happening during war, I can understand why that will bother some people.

(Also don't hate or like this pairing, and am perfectly fine to let people keep shipping it.)

I don't really have much opinion on Reylo beyond the fact it's never going to happen in canon, so why worry if others want to ship it?

This is why I can't get into Star Wars fandom. I dabble occasionally and like some cute art but my god, the people in it are unbearable. I'm not allowed to ship a hero and a villain because apparently it's abusive, but I'm morally obligated to ship a dude with another dude because they're both POC and it's the "right thing to do", although if I ship two villain males I'm a racist who only likes white people, and if I don't see Rey as a lesbian I'm apparently a terrible person.

Psh. You say that like its a deterrent. I might actually be a little disappointed if they turn out just to be cousins instead of straight up siblings (IDK SOMEHOW). I definitely would be if they turned out not to be related at all. I came out of the movie shipping their fucked up, dirtybadwrong, power-struggling, almost certainly incestuous dynamic, damn it, and I will not be denied!
