What is your biggest fandom regret?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not posting that fic, getting rid of that now-super-rare merch, staying in the fandom for too long, leaving too soon...

That I wasted my teenage and early twenty years on it. There was so much more to life.

Like what?

Well just my own personal opinion, but the thing I miss most about being young is having no responsibilities and the freedom to spend time and money on enjoying life instead of squirrelling away ever penny in terror of the future.

What I miss most is hanging out with my friends until the wee hours, talking, walking around the city while it's the dead of night, hopping on a bus to random places on our days off and generally living life roaming the country unfettered.

If I hadn't spent time on fandom - and I spent a lot of it - I could have packed even more of that into my life. Now I'm sick (too sick to go out much, hence being on FS) and facing a fucking bleak future and I wish to god I hadn't wasted the health and youth I was given on the fucking internet.

Ah. I never had those things as a youth, so I can't regret losing them to something else. I hope things turn around for you nonny, so that your days may be filled with freedom and adventure once more.

I only had it for a few years but they were the best years of my life by far. Though they were at the expense of settling down, saving money and generally taking care of my long term future. (I wish I'd goddamn known I was going to get sick.)

Thanks. I think those days are gone for me now but thank you. Best wishes to you too.

That I didn't join sooner. I didn't know it existed until I was over 18. I watch teenage fans being excited and happy and I feel like I missed that entering too late.

Being involved in the Harry Potter ship wars back in the day. Ugh.

Meeting the "friend" whose abuse and manipulation almost destroyed me.

I hear you on that.

Yeah, I hear you on that, too.

A friend talked me into leaving an RP group with her by having the characters leave town.

In fairness to us, there had been quite a bit of drama in the group. But it was still a horrible way to handle it, and I still feel awful.

I also have fandom regrets concerning friends who were unkind to me. I wouldn't say they were abusive or anything, but they were spiteful, bitter teenagers, who either dragged me into being just as spiteful, or brought me down on good days and made me feel worse on my bad days.

I regret some of the money I've spent on fandom too. I can usually cherish fandom merch even after I leave fandom, but how I always found it within myself to buy presents and pay for shipping for ungrateful fandom friends is a mystery to me.

That I wasted so much time on that RP group that quickly degenerated into an exercise in the abuse and control of other people, and the "friends" who did so much damage to me.

That seems to be a running theme with RP groups. What heck is it about that hobby that attracts so many abusive, terrible people?

I'm sorry so many people had such a negative experience. I met so many of my best friends through RPing.

I guess it depends on the individual. But I've noticed that people who are looking for someone else to force their issues onto seems to be a running theme with RPers. I gave up the hobby altogether as a result. Writing fanfic by myself won't drive me into therapy at least.

I should have started writing fic sooner. Would have saved me a lot of complaining over "wah wah fandom isn't the way I want it to be" if I had decided to be a part of fandom myself.

Making friends with a couple of BNFs in different fandoms and having those friendships kind of explode. I've been burned twice, and I don't want it to happen again. The most recent one was in a band fandom and has kinda ruined my enjoyment of the band's music atm. Hoping that'll fade with time.

Writing a fic that a bunch of really annoying people kept demanding more of even when I made it clear I'm not interested in writing more of it.

Losing/breaking/letting my family get rid of some of my old Transformers. I've seen them around on-line. They're worth money, even out of the package. Why did I let people touch them?

Back when I was in the Veronica Mars fandom, I wrote a fic about Duncan's daughter as a teenager that I had almost finished and was really proud of and I think would have gone over well with the fandom (there was a lot about OG Lilly Kane in it). But there was one part in the middle I could never figure out how to write, and even though it was 90% done I never finished it.

I realize this is very minor for a fandom regret, but it still gnaws at me almost 10 years later. And I got so disenchanted with everything VM in that last season that I don't really have the heart to go back and finish it.

Indulging in sanctimonious, canon-puritanical Mary-Sue sporking fic.
