I'm so thankful the internet didn't become a thing until I was university-aged. Even then I was immature and embarrassing enough. *sits back and reflects on some early-fandom memories and cringes violently*

This secret's a timely reminder, since I have recently gotten into a fandom that has a lot younger userbase than I've become used to and sometimes I feel myself getting frustrated with their cluelessness... I have to keep reminding myself that I've (not infrequently) seen 40+ year olds who are at least as bad, and at least the young-teens have an excuse.

The internet was definitely a thing when I was a teen, but not the way it is today. Now almost everyone is connected 24/7, or at least has a smart phone and several social media apps, and I can't imagine growing up with the internet as it is now. (Because those things you're cringing about would likely be more public, lol. And believe me, I understand not wanting that. I frequently think back on past events and cringe.)

and at least the young-teens have an excuse

Haha, yea. You learn as you go! No one can know everything up front, you've got to experience it yourself. It's so much easier to sympathize with young kids/teens once you go, "Oh, right, I did that too", or at least, "You weren't perfect either; cut them some slack."
