(God, I think back to my teen days and am so embarrassed I ever had internet access, lol. Thankfully I didn't make an ass of myself on social media or anything like that, but looking back at some of the posts I made and stupid things I said...ugh. When I see someone who I suspect is rather young I think about my past and know what it's like. Plus, I'm embarrassing even now, so.)
Anyway, good luck with everything, OP. Hope everything eventually works out for you.

A lot of that stuff is buried now, and I'm thankful.

But now it seems very common to put very private information out there for everyone to see, like people I have on Facebook who almost use it like a diary, it's so weird. And kids atm are definitely not taught to be safe enough(not that they need the EVERYONE ONLINE IS A KIDNAPPER mentality, but maybe a little bit of safety information?).

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)Teens are notorious for not listening to authority figures, so I don't think it's fair to say their parents are idiots.

When you're young you often don't think of these things, but some of the information they share could come back to haunt them in the future. I didn't give out my personal info often either because I'm a cautious person, but I have done it. I've been thankful I did, and I've also deeply regretted it; IA that kids do it too lightly. (Jesus Christ, I sound so old. Get the hell off my lawn!)
But seriously, things are always changing and in the world today it's so much easier to stalk, so if anything that's reason enough to me.

Definitely, it's understandable but kids do need to be taught about it for their own safety(either immediate or down the line, you'd never want some dumb post you made when you were 14 coming back to haunt you in your 30's).
The most I've given out is my first name and what country I live in, everything else I keep to myself and a lot that is definitely because I'm quite a private person.
Yeah, it's a horrible thing to consider but it does happen sadly.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)This secret's a timely reminder, since I have recently gotten into a fandom that has a lot younger userbase than I've become used to and sometimes I feel myself getting frustrated with their cluelessness... I have to keep reminding myself that I've (not infrequently) seen 40+ year olds who are at least as bad, and at least the young-teens have an excuse.

and at least the young-teens have an excuse
Haha, yea. You learn as you go! No one can know everything up front, you've got to experience it yourself. It's so much easier to sympathize with young kids/teens once you go, "Oh, right, I did that too", or at least, "You weren't perfect either; cut them some slack."
