I'm another person who is infinitely glad that social media didn't exist when I was young, I was an idiot back then. So yeah I give those who I know are young online some slack, you'll figure shit out as you get older.

Absolutely. It would be so much worse growing up with social media. It's easy to want to overshare online, and generally people are more ignorant when they're younger, and that isn't a great combination.

What's so weird is to see how the culture towards the Internet has changed, when I was a kid despite the fact that it was pretty much just IM programs and message boards I was taught to be VERY careful about what I told people about myself online, and basically always told to keep my real name a secret because 'you don't really know who the person on the other end is' and that's definitely something that I still adhere to even without thinking about it(it's always in the back of my mind yanno?).

But now it seems very common to put very private information out there for everyone to see, like people I have on Facebook who almost use it like a diary, it's so weird. And kids atm are definitely not taught to be safe enough(not that they need the EVERYONE ONLINE IS A KIDNAPPER mentality, but maybe a little bit of safety information?).

In the olden days far fewer people were online. Now that everyone's online, you see all the idiots coming out of the woodwork. And these idiots have idiot parents.

Aha, you've got a very good point there and that will create a culture that is far more lax about Internet safety.

DA

Teens are notorious for not listening to authority figures, so I don't think it's fair to say their parents are idiots.

I completely agree, though I don't even think using the internet as your diary is a terrible thing as long as you can stay somewhat vague and don't connect it to your real name. (Or just keep the more sensitive information private or for friends only, who should probably be people you know really well. I wouldn't do it, I'm too private and also lazy, but it could be done in a somewhat secure manner.)

When you're young you often don't think of these things, but some of the information they share could come back to haunt them in the future. I didn't give out my personal info often either because I'm a cautious person, but I have done it. I've been thankful I did, and I've also deeply regretted it; IA that kids do it too lightly. (Jesus Christ, I sound so old. Get the hell off my lawn!)

But seriously, things are always changing and in the world today it's so much easier to stalk, so if anything that's reason enough to me.

Oh yeah if something can be locked I don't think using it that way is bad, honestly sometimes when I just need to rant and talking out loud isn't doing the trick I type up a private post just to get it out of my mind and most of the time it helps, but I just worry sometimes when I see blog littered with all sorts of personal information but I know at least some of my misgivings are because of how I was taught to be on the Internet.

Definitely, it's understandable but kids do need to be taught about it for their own safety(either immediate or down the line, you'd never want some dumb post you made when you were 14 coming back to haunt you in your 30's).

The most I've given out is my first name and what country I live in, everything else I keep to myself and a lot that is definitely because I'm quite a private person.

Yeah, it's a horrible thing to consider but it does happen sadly.
